Description
Nanarc's Manipulation Tuturial Part 1: SmudgingDownload for a larger version if you want to see the fur up close. This tutorial will work for either photoshop or gimp (all parts) but this particular part is optimized for Gimp because I love it's smudge feature. I like it a LOT better than the photoshop smudge.
As mentioned, the most important part is to find a good image. Stay away from premade backgrounds. Usually their so colorized and the texture is gone from them so much that you can't use them anyway (especially the ones with fog). If you like a premade, find the stock images it was created from and try making your own version of it instead.
Don't over smudge the fur!

In Photoshop:
-- Use the selection brush and paint over the wolf, then do "select inverse" and control-X to cut the background away.
In Gimp:
-- Using your erasor tool, (usually I use a very small brush to get close to the wolf, then use a larger one to get the rest of the area not touching the wolf), erase along the OUTSIDE edge of thew wolf. Then just erase or cut the rest of the background away. Your background should be transparent (which you can set up in the "Edit > Preferencese" section of gimp BEFORE you open a new blank file. If you have the background set to white then it wont come out transparent. <3

It's ironic how we do our smudging very similar-like.

How is it ironic? It's a very common way of smudging...
