Terms for using my tutorials
When using my tutorials or techniques explained in my tutorials all I need is that you say or write "Inspired by Talty" somewhere on the description, that's all I'm asking for. A link back to my gallery or tutorial is appreciated, but not necessary. You can make anything in my tutorials for personal or commercial purposes (yes, that means you can sell what you make) but you can't claim these techniques as your own. No redistribution, reposting or repacking of my tutorials, images, text or any part of them is allowed. They can't be translated to other languages without my permission (ask me about it). FREE TUTORIAL, NEVER TRY TO SELL IT.
This is a really nice and cheap technique a friend of mine taught me. I can't tell you how much I love my sugar scrub!
- I use it before I start to remove cat hair, lint, etc. That way my clay stays clean!
- When I change colors to avoid transferring them.
- When I'm done sculpting so I don't contaminate everything I touch.
- Whenever my hands are dirty (paint, dough, gardening, etc).
- If my hands feel dry in a cold day.
It's wonderful, when you work with clay you have to clean your hands constantly, and after a couple of times they get dry and uncomfortable. This leaves them soft so you never have to worry about that "paper skin" feeling ever again. Highly recommended!
Edit: =moofestgirl has a tip for people with sensitive skin: "I made some of this today, and OH MY GOD! I have SUPER sensitive skin, like any contact with water drys out my hands in an instant, because of that I have resorted to baby wipes. But this is GREAT! I used some sensitive skin dish soap, it's got that Olay mixed in xp And I used baby oil."
Edit 2: ~limbairedhiel recommends: You could try subbing sea salt (or any other coarse salt) for sugar if your worried about ants. Works the same way and leaves skin silky smooth (also helps open pores to get rid of oil).
Theory: The plasticizer in the clay is a mixture of phthalates (not for long, most brands are phasing them out). Phthalates are slightly fat soluble, so the oil will help remove them. I did a test with several oils and I couldn't find a significant difference between oils, they all worked fine. The sugar will do the scrubbing, getting in hard places and getting rid all of those stubborn bits of clay under your nails or in the wrinkles of your fingers. Using only sugar and oil made my fingers feel a bit oily, so I add some liquid soap to the mixture to remove all the extra oil. Everything else is just extra, in case you want to add some benefits to your scrub.

Cant you do this with salt as well? We are stationed over some very important ant tribe so id like to not shake our fragile situation

Talty In reply to GloryB2God [2012-02-13 02:33:53 +0000 UTC]
Sugar is usually recommended because it's more gentle on the skin, but salt is totally fine ^^ I've been thinking of using salt this spring because I hate ant invasions
If you try it please let me know how it turns out!

Same thing happens to me all the time, I throw stuff away and I need it a couple of days later. Well at least it's easy enough to make, and it really helps when you're sculpting xD

This is PERFECT. I felt softer right after using it, and got all the clay off!
I can't buy store made sugar scrubs because most of them (including soaps, shampoos, body washes, etc.) Have EDTA in it and I am severely allergic to it. Doing this I was able to use my organic dish soap, baby oil, and some essential oils I have that I like the smell of. I am in love with this

I'm so glad you liked it! It makes me really happy to help, so I appreciate that you let me know!
Wow I didn't know there was an allergy to EDTA, but it must be difficult! It's in so many things, even food xP I'm glad I could help you, even if only a bit!

Yea no prob
It is x_x Its really an allergy to what it does, not the actual chemical itself, which is weird lol.
I don't even want to think what would happen if I drank it x_x
again, thank you so much!

Me dieron curiosidad tus cruces.
Sos muy talentosa. ^_^

Oh my goodness I made some of this with the handsoap in my dorm's bathroom, sugar, vegetable oil and vanilla extract and it works miracles! Not just on getting the clay out of my fingers, but ive cured several roomates dry hand issues. This is pure genius!

How much soap do you need to add?
π: 0 β©: 1
Talty In reply to shocka123 [2011-11-19 01:14:50 +0000 UTC]
That depends on how much you are preparing, I like to make it in small batches so I only use one tablespoon of soap and one tablespoon of oils.

No longer shall that pesky red clay make a mess of my other colors! Thank you so much for making this
Although, just curious, will this soften your hands even if you're not using clay at the moment?

I know how that is, it's awful T_T you are welcome, I'm glad I could help!
And yes it also works to soften your hands, I use it when my hands feel a bit dry.
