This is a really nice and cheap technique a friend of mine taught me. I can't tell you how much I love my sugar scrub!

- I use it before I start to remove cat hair, lint, etc. That way my clay stays clean!
- When I change colors to avoid transferring them.
- When I'm done sculpting so I don't contaminate everything I touch.
- Whenever my hands are dirty (paint, dough, gardening, etc).
- If my hands feel dry in a cold day.

It's wonderful, when you work with clay you have to clean your hands constantly, and after a couple of times they get dry and uncomfortable. This leaves them soft so you never have to worry about that "paper skin" feeling ever again. Highly recommended!

Edit: =moofestgirl has a tip for people with sensitive skin: "I made some of this today, and OH MY GOD! I have SUPER sensitive skin, like any contact with water drys out my hands in an instant, because of that I have resorted to baby wipes. But this is GREAT! I used some sensitive skin dish soap, it's got that Olay mixed in xp And I used baby oil."

Edit 2: ~limbairedhiel recommends: You could try subbing sea salt (or any other coarse salt) for sugar if your worried about ants. Works the same way and leaves skin silky smooth (also helps open pores to get rid of oil).

Theory: The plasticizer in the clay is a mixture of phthalates (not for long, most brands are phasing them out). Phthalates are slightly fat soluble, so the oil will help remove them. I did a test with several oils and I couldn't find a significant difference between oils, they all worked fine. The sugar will do the scrubbing, getting in hard places and getting rid all of those stubborn bits of clay under your nails or in the wrinkles of your fingers. Using only sugar and oil made my fingers feel a bit oily, so I add some liquid soap to the mixture to remove all the extra oil. Everything else is just extra, in case you want to add some benefits to your scrub.

Just tried this out. It works perfectly! I think I will try out different oils next time. I only used olive oil and it did leave my hands a tiny bit dry.

Thank you!

I'm so glad to know that it worked so well for you! Yup olive oil is not the most hydrating in this case, I find that almond oil is just perfect for me or maybe add just a bit more of olive oil.

Could I use salt instead of sugar?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to angelthefurbat1 [2013-06-16 04:05:32 +0000 UTC]

Sure, I think that salt is more scratchy than sugar but you can definitely use it.

I think I tweaked a bit I used the same amounts of oil and body wash/soap but it was too thin and liquid-y.. I'm also running out of salt/sugar. Can I fix this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to angelthefurbat1 [2013-06-18 15:16:33 +0000 UTC]

It sounds like you used a bit too much oil/soap, I would add more salt/sugar but if you're running out of them and can't get more soon... maybe try leaving the lid open and see if it dries a bit? Sometimes the soap dries out.

Ahh ok, so sorry this took so long to be replied to I was finishing up school then I had to move...
So. I tried it out- I'm afraid it didn't work that well, (probably because I used the bare minimum: olive oil, hand soap, sugar and a little bit of honey) I didn't really like the smell of the olive oil- it's a little too strong for my taste. I'm probably going to retry it soon with some better ingredients- maybe some nice fragrant oil like coconut oil or some better soap. thanks a lot for the tutorial! It's a great idea and it helped me out a lot. ^^

Is it odd that that the first thought that came into my mind was not even clay related? It was "Hey I have that same nail stamp!"

This is the best thing ever. sadly it did not manage to get the charcoal powder off of me. but my hands are smooth. and they don't smell like onions! i cut one of Monday and had to wash my hands eight times just to lessen the intensity of the smell. yet they still smelt like onions this morning (Thursday). I cut another onion today and tried the scrub about 20 min later and no onion smell! i have been searching for a year for something to get rid of onion smells! this one fact makes sugar scrubs the best thing on earth.

Oh I'm sorry to read that it didn't get rid of charcoal powder, it's a pretty stubborn thing I was really hoping it would! Well I'm glad that it did help with the onions, what a difference

Im going to try a brown sugar mix next time in the hopes that smaller crystals will work better on the stubborn powder.

Ah I thought you did this sort of tut! Quick Q though.. Does this work with TLS because I keep getting my hands in it and nothing will wash it off

Talty In reply to Demoncherry [2012-08-03 19:14:33 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply, and yes it works great to remove TLS, sticky clay and even the clay that gets in your fingers after using clay softener

Thank you! i just rubbed black polymer clay at my hands, used sugar scrub, and then rubbed white polymer clay at my hands. And the white is still clean! I'm so happy it worked. I bought baby oil just because of this :3

Thank you for sharing this recipe! I have recently purchased a book on polymer clay which has a similar recipe called 'Clay be gone sugar scrub' but it is harder to understand and there is no pictures so this tutorial has really helped me!
I'm just wondering, why would ants raid your home? Sorry, I don't have many ants around where I live!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to Sugarfloss9 [2012-06-19 06:53:47 +0000 UTC]

Really, what book was it? I'm glad my version was easier to understand!

Well some places have problems with ants infestations it's so bad that some people have to keep the food in air-thigh containers or the ants will find it and invade the pantry. Ants are pretty much everywhere, but it's more serious in some places, specially if you live in a ground floor there was one particular spring that everytime I used this and didn't rinse the sink, we would wake up with the sink full of ants.

Oh. I didn't realize ants like sugar scrub so much!!!
The book is called 'Polymer Clay Cookbook' by Jessica and Susan Partain. I live in the U.K. so prices may vary, but I got it for around £7.00

Your very welcome! It is very good, but it is more for beginners, not professionals like you! However, you may find it useful.

Talty In reply to Sugarfloss9 [2012-06-20 15:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Well I still consider myself a beginner, I haven't been doing this for long and there's still so much I want to learn although the projects in the cover did seem a bit basic to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sugarfloss9 In reply to Talty [2012-06-20 19:23:50 +0000 UTC]

Wow! If that's you as a beginner...you'll be the best clayer in the world when you reach professionalism. I agree, the projects also seemed a bit basic for me as well. I have been looking for something that would maybe suit your ability more, and I found one that maybe you might find better? The link is to the U.k. amazon, but you could probably find it somewhere else :[link]

I made something similar for my dad for Christmas, only I used sea salt. You could try subbing sea salt (or any other coarse salt) for sugar if your worried about ants. Works the same way and leaves skin silky smooth (also helps open pores to get rid of oil).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Talty In reply to limbairedhiel [2012-06-18 17:59:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tip! I added it to the comment section so it can help more people ^^ personally I prefer to use sugar, I feel that salt is more scratchy and since sometimes I use this 10 times per day the scratchiness adds up. It's still a pretty good idea and a nice touch to your dad ^^
