Description Download is good!

Well, well... I actually made this. People have asked me SO many times how I make my comics so here you go. Oh, and this is SIMPLE tutorial. I have simplified some things because the idea of this is to get the basic idea how I make the comic. For example, Lost Tower is really on it's own layer but I made it a part of the BG in this tutorial.

At first I was going to make a tutorial only about the shadows but I figured that I might as well show the comic progress step by step. I hope you'll find this interesting and if you learned something from this. Great! Oh, one tip for the shadows. You don't need to use bluish shadows. You can also use other colors and see how they affect the multiply result. Play around with the Hue/Saturation adjustment to get interesting results.

About line arts... I have done line arts with pencil/markers too but I've find that I get the best result with digital ways. It takes more time though and, to me, line art is the most time consuming part in comic making.

The program I use is Photoshop CS5 but you can do this with older versions too. As for other programs... There shouldn't be anything too complicated here so I think they are good too.

Edit: Commonly asked questions:

How long does it usually take to make one page?
- Depending on how complicated the page is (amount of characters and/or effects), about 5-10 hours.

How big are your working files?
- I don't change the size of scanned documents in any way. The size of one comic page while I work and BEFORE resizing is usually 2457x3437. Resolution 300. (very random numbers indeed).

And of course, you can see the final result here.

FunkyFunKing In reply to ??? [2012-03-04 09:20:16 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Since my computer doesn't work very well instead I only scan it up at a 300-600 resolution. The program I use often is Corel Painter Essentials 4 and when I practice lineart I use a pen tool. But the problem is it appears very blocky and the edges aren't very smooth because the resolution is too small. So I soften the drawing after it is finished... But there are some parts in a drawing that come out VERY VERY WRONG!!! I can't even fix it because when I fix those parts they come out all blocky and it doesn't blend in well with the softness of the drawing... At least my dad is planning on getting me a newer model of a computer... And maybe Paint Tool SAI if I am lucky...

Great tutorial! It really helped me, since I just got Photoshop.
Which Wacom tablet do you use? What size is it?
I need to buy one, so I'm wondering.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to Rukushio [2012-02-26 10:31:45 +0000 UTC]

Great that it was helpful.

I have wacom intuos 3 (old model). Its current version is one of the biggest and probably most expensive ones. I have experience with different tablets and I can say the size is not that important. Wacom bamboo is their cheapest model and it is still really good. I recommend to check their site and think which tablet suits best for your.

Nuclearpsychotic In reply to ??? [2012-02-23 04:39:30 +0000 UTC]

I just got photoshop and was reading this...do you draw the speech bubbles or can you just insert in already-made speech bubbles like with Comic life?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to Nuclearpsychotic [2012-02-23 07:45:39 +0000 UTC]

You could do that. But if find it hard t make them fit. Instead, I use normal rectangle tool to make a white ellipses for speech bubbles. I make sure they are all on their own layers. Once I am done, I double click the layer, and choose "stroke" effect. This makes black lines appear around the white bubbles. I make it as thick as I please. Then, I just draw the bubble tail on same layer so the stroke effect follows it.

Nuclearpsychotic In reply to TamarinFrog [2012-02-23 22:19:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks 4 the awesome tip! It really helped! Just one more thing? How do you use the bucket tool on separate layers?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to Nuclearpsychotic [2012-02-23 22:36:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't use bucket tool that often anymore. But, I don't really get what you are asking...

I really need to go to sleep now but if you want to tell more, I will answer when I get back.

Is Photoshop CS5 really expensive? How much is it?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to TheLegendaryTrainer [2012-02-01 07:30:06 +0000 UTC]

It is. I think it can come close to even 1000 euros (sorry, don't know dollar prices). It is wiser to buy Adobe packages (like did) that come with multiple programs since they cost almost the same. But here is the catch, if you are a student, you get 80% off of the price. So, I got my premium package for... About 400-500 euros. I recommend to check their official site and see what kind of offers they have. Of course, there are cheaper programs, such as VERY popular Paint tool Sai. It costs only about 52 euros (and I think more people use it here than Photoshop). There are also completely free art programs too. Like Gimp and My Paint. Google is your friend now. Search info of these programs and think what suits you the best.
