Description
Download is good!Well, well... I actually made this. People have asked me SO many times how I make my comics so here you go. Oh, and this is SIMPLE tutorial. I have simplified some things because the idea of this is to get the basic idea how I make the comic. For example, Lost Tower is really on it's own layer but I made it a part of the BG in this tutorial.
At first I was going to make a tutorial only about the shadows but I figured that I might as well show the comic progress step by step. I hope you'll find this interesting and if you learned something from this. Great! Oh, one tip for the shadows. You don't need to use bluish shadows. You can also use other colors and see how they affect the multiply result. Play around with the Hue/Saturation adjustment to get interesting results.
About line arts... I have done line arts with pencil/markers too but I've find that I get the best result with digital ways. It takes more time though and, to me, line art is the most time consuming part in comic making.
The program I use is Photoshop CS5 but you can do this with older versions too. As for other programs... There shouldn't be anything too complicated here so I think they are good too.
Edit: Commonly asked questions:
How long does it usually take to make one page?
- Depending on how complicated the page is (amount of characters and/or effects), about 5-10 hours.
How big are your working files?
- I don't change the size of scanned documents in any way. The size of one comic page while I work and BEFORE resizing is usually 2457x3437. Resolution 300. (very random numbers indeed).
And of course, you can see the final result here.

I've got a question about the shapes you make. What kind of tool you use then for making those shapes? And what kind of program are you using to make your digital artworks?
Will you plz andser my questions BehindtG?

Certainly!
I use Photoshop CS5. When drawing, I try to use my own hand as much as I can but sometimes I use ellipse tool/elliptical marquee tool and pen tool to help things out.

ooh..I thought you were using Sai because I really want to make shapes in that way. I'm seeing that the most.
And will you maybe please send me the link for downloading that program? I've got then Sai but I want to try loads of digital programs to use ^^

Photoshop is not a free program so you have to buy it. (and it is very expensive unless you can get a student discount.)
Of course, there are ways to download it but I can't help you with that.

i have a problem when doing BGs how can I do one without it affect the drawings I already have...
wat i have to do or in wat layer i have to put it so the bag round stays like it and it won't affect the image (drawings) in front of it like urs......
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to lokkyta [2011-12-04 09:34:28 +0000 UTC]
Ah, make sure your BG layer is at the bottom. Like this for example:
Lineart layer
color layer
BG layer.

lokkyta In reply to TamarinFrog [2011-12-04 19:21:02 +0000 UTC]
and do i put the BG layer in normal or multiply? I don't use PS but I use Open Canvas that is quiet the same thing of layers xD
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to lokkyta [2011-12-05 14:02:40 +0000 UTC]
Normal (unless you need multiply for effects or something special). And don't be afraid to use multiple BG layers. I always have one for sky, one for clouds, one for ground, etc.
π: 0 β©: 1
lokkyta In reply to TamarinFrog [2011-12-05 21:28:33 +0000 UTC]
ok and i can do like fist the line art of the drawings and when I have it all painted, I just do the BG on the first layer on normal right?
like:
color layer
line art layer
BG layer
something like this???? xD sorry for the questions but I just wanna be better on this for my comic
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to lokkyta [2011-12-06 12:14:41 +0000 UTC]
Um, yeah. Keep the lineart at the top so colors stay under the lines. And BG layer is at the bottom so lineart and colors are top of it.
π: 0 β©: 1
lokkyta In reply to TamarinFrog [2011-12-06 14:09:13 +0000 UTC]
and the line arts and colors should be in normal or in multiply?
well i always use lines in normal and color in multiply.... but if BG is normal don't know if that change??? and thanks for all the information xD u are helping me a lot.
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to lokkyta [2011-12-08 10:51:32 +0000 UTC]
Hmm... It depends how you work... I usually keep the lineart layer on top thus it can be on normal (I do my linearts digitally mostly) or multiply (better if you have a scanned lineart). Colors, keep them on normal.

i have a question how i can do the bubbles on open canvas and the divisions because I'm gonna start a comic soon...
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to lokkyta [2011-12-02 10:17:29 +0000 UTC]
Aah, I have very little experience with other programs. A VERY easy way to make bubbles is just to use the ellipse tool and make a white bubble and draw the "tail". IF those programs have layer effects, you can add "stroke" effect to the bubble layer and add the black line that way. That is how I do speech bubbles these days.

You can make custom brushes and make them more smooth, sure. There is also a smoothing tool but I rarely use it.

Hey, BehindtG, I have a question.
I'm starting up my own comic soon, but I just wanted to ask if you draw your pages on A4 size and then connect them somehow, or if you use two pages in one A4 page? Sorry if that sounded confusing! It'd be great if you could get back to me on this, though I know you're busy
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to dizzyrin [2011-11-28 13:25:09 +0000 UTC]
Ah yes, I draw one page to normal A4 sized paper and on computer, I connect two pages together once they are done.

I'm gonna get a New drawing Program soon, so I came here to pick up tips, As I really love your Comics. I never thought about Shading that way before... (then again, I can't really do that on paint) one reason as to why I chose you to look for tips is... well.... it's a comic and... I'm gonna be making TONS of those. (including one about a Sableye~!) keep up your amazing work, and don't let anyone tell you your work is anything BUT Amazing, beautiful, thought provoking, inspiring-
GTM: Alright, that's it. I think she gets the point. *starts to drag me away*

I think it is the fact that I use thick brush and the image resolution is at least 300.

I noticed you changed the ghost types (Sorry I forgot her name ><) mouth to a more playful one, Was there any reason for that or did you think the other one fitted better?

π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to Humble-One [2011-09-13 07:19:18 +0000 UTC]
Depends on the complexity. One page can take from 5 hours to even 7 or more depending on how much details and effects it needs.
