Description
Download is good!Well, well... I actually made this. People have asked me SO many times how I make my comics so here you go. Oh, and this is SIMPLE tutorial. I have simplified some things because the idea of this is to get the basic idea how I make the comic. For example, Lost Tower is really on it's own layer but I made it a part of the BG in this tutorial.
At first I was going to make a tutorial only about the shadows but I figured that I might as well show the comic progress step by step. I hope you'll find this interesting and if you learned something from this. Great! Oh, one tip for the shadows. You don't need to use bluish shadows. You can also use other colors and see how they affect the multiply result. Play around with the Hue/Saturation adjustment to get interesting results.
About line arts... I have done line arts with pencil/markers too but I've find that I get the best result with digital ways. It takes more time though and, to me, line art is the most time consuming part in comic making.
The program I use is Photoshop CS5 but you can do this with older versions too. As for other programs... There shouldn't be anything too complicated here so I think they are good too.
Edit: Commonly asked questions:
How long does it usually take to make one page?
- Depending on how complicated the page is (amount of characters and/or effects), about 5-10 hours.
How big are your working files?
- I don't change the size of scanned documents in any way. The size of one comic page while I work and BEFORE resizing is usually 2457x3437. Resolution 300. (very random numbers indeed).
And of course, you can see the final result here.

I have a question!
Do you use always the same color of shadows (grayish blue) for all RD characters?
Because Scratch has a very light color, but their shadows are not as dark as those samples in tutorial ...

No, I do change the color sometimes depending the situation. It could be lighter or darker or more reddish than blue.

I got a question about this tutorial.
You use Phtotshop, but isn't Photoshop for PHOTOS, not illustrations?
I assumed that Adobe Illustrator should be the one for comics, or Corel Painter for Wacom Tablets.

TamarinFrog In reply to xRicKx [2011-06-28 07:38:04 +0000 UTC]
Yes, photoshop is best for photo manipulation but it is widely used for painting too.

How do you make your digital lines so smooth?! T-T
Also, I have photoshop Elements, and I cant find the clipping mask function anywhere...
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to Chyanime [2011-06-23 07:42:17 +0000 UTC]
Remember to have lots of resolution when working. All my works have at least 300 pixel/inch. I think that is one reason why the lines come so smoothly.
I'm not familiar with the Photoshop element so I can't help you there.

The working files are in photoshop format and the final internet version is png file. I keep the photoshop files safe for future references.

You are a legend
I have been searching for a tutorial on how to make a comic correctly...and you have managed to answer every single question i had in this one tutorial <3
Now if only i had a scanner xD
π: 0 β©: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to X-Kite-X [2011-05-14 09:47:12 +0000 UTC]
Glad to hear this was helpful.
Scanner is not actually needed. I have started to make all my comics 100% digital now. I do the sketching on photoshop too now. Just choose a color (blue for example) and sketch the panels. Once you are done, lower the opacity of the sketch layer and create a new layer for the lineart above it.
