Description
Someone on tumblr asked me how I go about imitating the splatoon style and my hand slipped. Hope you enjoy! I also created an even better brush for this while doing this so it was all good. :')I forgot to mention in the tutorial, I used Photoshop CS5.
And my tablet feels okay again! Yay! I can draw again!
Edit: updated the brush part so now creating the brush should be a lot easier. To recap, create the triangle brush and use it as a dual brush with the other to get this dry paint brush aka splatoon brush.
Edit: You can now download the brushes here:

I actually got these brushes to work in Phooshop Elements 6 but of course I couldn't figure out how to do the dual painting thing (I don't believe it's an option in elements anyway but I dion't think the full vers of photoshop I have [7] would work with these so I didn't try) thanks though; I'll keep these in mind for the future when i get a laptop that can handle newer programs <3

Thanks for the tutorial! I couldn't get a perfect replica of your brush (I'm on a different OS and using a different drawing tool) so I kinda played with the brush PNGs until I got something percentable. Here's what I drew: Splatoon 2 Inkling

Omg I'm confused with the brushes n @
I already downloaded the "Splatoon Brush" but I'm getting confused on the "Dual brush" setting ;u;
I'm using PS CS6

In photoshop, you need to open the brush settings. There you can see "dual brush" setting and choose the triangle/kolmia brush as splatoon brush's dual brush.

Woahh!!
That's really cool!!
I downloaded the brushes, but I've got a question...
How do I like, put them "together" to a dual brush thing in PS CS6?

TamarinFrog In reply to manonvh [2015-11-24 10:42:28 +0000 UTC]
Yes it should be. In brush setting you should find "dual brush" settings

Nice! I feel like the original artwork may have used a "chalk" brush though, kinda like what corel painter has

Quite a splatastic tutorial! I didn't really follow through it in the step-by-step that you have shown off here (I went with keeping all color layers separated), but this is what I got on my attempt at the style with the brushes.
chainchomp7.deviantart.com/art…
Also, it seems like I didn't understand the "Dual Brush" method. I just continued the style just using the Brush only, sometimes using the triangle for solid coloring. And the solid-color work in FireAlpaca before hopping over to Photoshop. I suppose it'll be more accurate when I try the Dual Brush method for some other art...

I believe that the Splatoon Brush is to be used in Adobe Photoshop. TamarinFrog mentions the brushes were done in Photoshop CS5 for this tutorial.

I'm getting the Intuos for Christmas in hopes to get better in digital art. Is Adobe Photoshop expensive?

chainchomp7 In reply to PLASTICU [2015-11-19 02:36:33 +0000 UTC]
Having a nice tablet is definitely a plus! I'm not sure what's the exact pricing for Photoshop though. Not sure how much Adobe's really asking for. I'd be cautious to not to spend too much money...

PLASTICU In reply to chainchomp7 [2015-11-19 02:39:22 +0000 UTC]
It asks for 10$ a month. I'm going to try gimp as a free drawing service. I'll also get the tablet.

chainchomp7 In reply to PLASTICU [2015-11-19 17:44:44 +0000 UTC]
There's also a free software called FireAlpaca, which is great for cartoon illustrations! And if your tablet has pressure-sensitivity, it should work great on that! c:
Unfortunately, I think the custom Splatoon brushes were just designed for Photoshop...

Well I might pay for one month to see how photoshop works. I'm not good with paying for every month though. I don't have much money. Thanks for the help though! I'll use all this information too!
