Description
Someone on tumblr asked me how I go about imitating the splatoon style and my hand slipped. Hope you enjoy! I also created an even better brush for this while doing this so it was all good. :')I forgot to mention in the tutorial, I used Photoshop CS5.
And my tablet feels okay again! Yay! I can draw again!
Edit: updated the brush part so now creating the brush should be a lot easier. To recap, create the triangle brush and use it as a dual brush with the other to get this dry paint brush aka splatoon brush.
Edit: You can now download the brushes here:

Haha! I've used PS for like... almost 10 years but I still learn a few tricks with it sometimes.
And I'd love to do more tutorials sometimes, yes.

How did you get the triangle brush? I have Photoshop CC but mine doesn't have an upside down triangle brush??

I made it myself. To get this brush I used here, you need to make the upside down triangle brush first. Then make the brush that has multiple squares. Then take that square brush and apply the triangle brush to it as a dual brush.

What resolution did you make the brushes at?

Aaah, I like to work big so 300. Make sure you make the brushes complete black tho when creating them. In the pic they seem light purple.

Is there any chance you could post the brushes you used? Or post a merged brush since I have Photoshop Elements and you can't make dual brushes on that.

Really awesome, i really love the spray paint look
I do have one question though
when you put down the base colors, what brush do you use then?
I do like this…semi faux painting style that isn't great haha, but the brush i use is transparent at the ends so i have to press down harder for the regular color and while its not bad…its really frustrating at other points 8B
Thank ya

When I put down the base colors, I use the most basic hard round photoshop brush. No transparency

Ah thank you very much
its probably cause I'm not well versed in digital but when i color its so saturated, even after I lower the saturation.
Guess its all trial and error haha

Hmm, this might come in handy. It's always cool seeing how you do what you do.
Speaking of which, is there any way for someone to watch that one stream you did where you did that "Tentacle in Tentacle" comic? I might need to reference that process again for some future works...

Ah, sorry. Picarto doesn't save any streams unless you have a subscription. Which, I don't

Question- did you mean one layer? Where your talking about fixing the color and getting rid of the shaky edges....
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TamarinFrog In reply to Shinobi-Kitty [2015-06-10 18:53:03 +0000 UTC]
Yes, colors are on one layer at that point. After that I star separating them.

Shinobi-Kitty In reply to TamarinFrog [2015-06-10 23:16:16 +0000 UTC]
In the picture you have it saying "only own layer" instead of "only one layer"

TamarinFrog In reply to Shinobi-Kitty [2015-06-10 23:35:16 +0000 UTC]
I had to look this up and I wrote "This is why I like to keep all the colors on their own layer for now". "layer" is not in plural so it means all the colors are on one layer of their own.

I have sai too, but you may be able to mess around with the brush tool and flat bristle style .0. it won't look exactly the same, but it will be similar.
