EDIT: Since I have been learning a bit more about color theory I noticed how monochrome the background of this picture was. To experiment I added a blue tone to break up all of that green. Not too big of a change, but this was a favorite of mine so I felt the need to improve it a bit.

Years ago I came up with a little mini project to design unusual gryphons that were comprised of different species of birds. I've decided to pick that project up again. ^_^

I had noticed earlier that there just isn't enough fantasy artwork in my gallery. I plan to rectify this. Hope you all enjoy the montage of gryphons to come! In the meantime here's a little tidbit of fantasy-trivia to entertain you (thank you Wikipedia).

Hummingryph~ genus [Felis Trochilidae]
This particular gryphon shares the characteristics of the common hummingbird and household cat. The little guy is very tiny- not much bigger than the bird he is modeled after in fact (he could fit in your palm!).

Hummingryphs drink nectar and like bees, they are able to assess the amount of sugar in the nectar they eat; they reject flower types that produce nectar that is less than 10% sugar and prefer those whose sugar content is stronger. Nectar is a poor source of nutrients, so hummingyphs meet their daily needs by preying on insects and spiders, especially when feeding young.

Hummingryphs are also able to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12–90 times per second (depending on the species). They can also fly backwards and can fly at speeds exceeding 15 m/s (54 km/h, 34 mi/h).
