Ayzen and Jia Li surprisingly go far even before their own birth. Before they were Ayzen and Jia Li, they were once Ardianto and Hoeng Li, humble villagers under the Dutch East Indies rule and later citizens of the Republic of Indonesia.

Ardianto was a kind and gentle soul, a dedicated pacifist who devoted his time to medicine under the tutelage of Hoeng Li's father. Hoeng Li was meek, easily scared and got easily sick. It was during his medicinal apprenticeship that Ardianto often took care of Hoeng Li, forging a close relationship.

In 1947, Ardianto, at the age of 17, was eager to do his part the Indonesian National Revolution and joined Sukarno's army as a medic. Even after the Dutch were defeated, Ardianto remained on lengthy tours with his comrades, taking part in many more battles that would finally forge the Republic of Indonesia. He never once fired a shot in anger, determined to follow his pacifistic ideals and rather did his part by saving the fellow Indonesian. It was only in 1964 did he finally return to the village as a war hero.

However, ethnic tensions were rising, and the indigenous pribumi races grew suspicious of the Chinese's economic prosperity and their association with communist China. In 1965, a terrible tragedy occurred on 30th September, later known as Gestapu in the history books, and spiraling out of the chaos were widespread attacks on the Chinese community. Ardianto's village was not spared. Terror units and angry mobs burnt down the Chinese portions of the village. Ardianto and Hoeng Li, a blasphemous union that was never meant to be, were executed.

While in the limbo between life and death, both souls were brought before a disembodied voice and were given a second chance. A second chance to resolve their weaknesses - a second chance to build a world where they will never be executed ever again. Ayzen would become a pure soldier at heart, willing to kill and fight to the death for the country, while Jia Li became a fierce martial arts fighter whom people would respect, or be forced to respect.
