Description Overview

Essentially an aircraft carrier smaller than the Tomahawk-class, the Spear-class is the force of choice for the ODF's doctrine of a flexible fast response navy, able to swiftly deploy strategic forces and project power quickly over an area. While its small size means less space for aircraft and ground troops, this more than adequately compensated with its cheaper cost and ability to sail in narrow water ways where capital ships such as the aforementioned Tomahawk would find difficult to navigate.

Weaponry

Similar to the Tomahawk-class, the Spear-class relies on its aircraft complement to do the firepower work rather than its own arsenal, which can be described as relatively meager against other enemy ships. An approximate number of 40 aircraft of various types can be housed within the carrier, ranging from Paladin III Strikefighters to Hercules II dropships. The majority type of aicraft often defines the parent Spear-class's role in combat; Paladin IIIs define it more as a mobile airbase for air superiority missions while having more Hercules II dropships will define it as a landing ship to deploy ground troops and vehicles into the combat zone. Up to a battalion of 2000 troops along with armored and support vehicles can also be housed and deployed via landing craft for smaller-scale strategic missions, often against insurgent-controlled cities and towns.

On its own, the Spear-class possesses 4 laser projectors as a versatile anti-ship, anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic missile defence, anti-submarine torpedo launchers and 2 CIWS miniguns for dealing with aircraft and incoming missiles.

Mobility

The Spear-class is highly mobile, able to catch up with other primary ODF vessels with a top speed of 90km/h. Propulsion is provided by powerful hydrojets which also gives the additional benefit of reducing noise during operations, giving it some form of rudimentary stealth at night against low-level opponents such as insurgents who do not usually have access to military-grade sensors and radar equipment. Six thermo-plasma generators provide the power the ship needs for at least two months straight, complemented with the necessary amount of stores such as food, ammunition and spare parts to last that long.

Armor and Defensive Subsystems

To preserve weight and tonnage, the Spear-class is relatively lightly armored with thin layers of Tryomite composite just enough to withstand light cannon, missile and light DEW strikes. Instead of surviving hits, the Spear-class relies on intercepting the enemy with its aircraft complement on long-range search and destroy patrols, and using a combination of CIWS and ECM to evade hits from guided ASMs and ballistic missiles. Other countermeasures such as plasma flares, smoke screens and radio decoys are also readily available as means to escape from an untenable position.
