Description Overview

The Sword-class Multiple Mission Vessel (MMV) is the backbone of the Oceanic Defence Forces' fleets as a versatile all-around ship that can conduct a wide variety of operations well ranging from fleet protection, hunting down enemy ships, coastal and littoral patrolling, anti-air and anti-submarine missions. It can also support ground troops with its VLS-based cruise missiles, striking enemy land-based targets with extreme precision from long range. With its universality, the Sword-class is unsurprisingly very common in almost any ODF formation; be it big capital fleets led by carriers or battleships or small maritime patrol squadrons.

Like most of the ODF's vessels, the Sword-class has a very small crew most of them from the Planetary Militia with many of its main systems and subsystems heavily automated and mechanised and coordinated with the use of Autoprograms and a central AI. A core team as small as 15 is enough to crew the ship with 5 in the bridge and the rest as engineers and technicians maintaining the ship's systems.

Weaponry

The Sword-class's weapons revolve around mission versatility; what it may lack in a specific type of firepower is compensated with its ability to engage almost all kinds of targets. The 90mm PASAT railgun fires plasma-sheathed anti-tank rounds more than capable of blowing holes in enemy ships and naval installations. Its 10 VLS silos, 5 silos found on each side of the command bridge, is mainly armed with long-range cruise missiles that can strike distant enemy ships and ground targets but internal autoloading systems can quickly switch to differing types of long-range missiles such as dedicated heavy surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles. The four Laser Projectors further complement the Sword-class's long-range precision strike capability, being able to zap and scorch smaller enemy vessels attempting to flank the ship or destroy exposed sensors, command bridges and weaponry of larger and heavily armored capital ships. Additionally, the lasers can be used to intercept and destroy incoming enemy aircraft or missiles, serving as a layer of the ship's defensive system.

Secondary armament consists of twin-linked 40mm AA CIWS turrets for close-range anti-air firepower as well as anti-submarine 4-tube torpedo launchers to destroy enemy submarines detected by the fleet. Additionally, a Hercule II dropship can be housed in the hangar module mounted on the rear which can be utilised for a wide variety of missions ranging from tactical insertions of special ops infantry, search and rescue operations as well as dropping torpedos on known enemy submarine locations in search and destroy missions.

Linking up the Sword-class with not only the fleet's sensor network but also the network of orbital satellites, aerial patrols and ground-based recon can considerably extend the range of the Sword-class's missile-based weaponry giving it the ability to strike enemy targets far beyond its own individual firing and detection radius.

Mobility

The Sword-class is a nimble, agile and speedy vessel with its hydrojets able to achieve speeds of 100km/h easily. This allows it to quickly evade enemy fire, reposition to defend its parent fleet or aggressively pursue enemy ships in search and destroy missions. The ship can also travel long distances with ample space for stores and two powerful Thermo-Plasma generators that provides enough energy to last for at least a month straight. This seaworthiness is vital especially in major planetary defensive operations where the Sword-class must be able to deploy with its fleet from one continent all the way to another if needed.

Armor and Defensive Subsystems

To preserve weight and tonnage, the Sword-class is relatively lightly armored with thin layers of Tryomite composite just enough to withstand light cannon, missile and light DEW strikes. Instead of surviving hits, the Sword-class relies on intercepting or evading enemy fire either with its CIWS guns, ECM or launching decoys that disorientate guided missile systems.
