Description Here's a page right out of the ol' sketchbook, an over symplified explanation of how to go about drawing portraits. It's easy, just try it!

Just three easy steps and ten years of daily practice, and you've got it!

She looks like Michelle Williams in her role of Glinda, the Good Witch of Oz. Lovely work, and so inspiring.

Okay, if you want to do a sketchbook, how about a basic "how-to" on drawing faces and figures?
If George Bridgman, Jack Hamm and Andrew Loomis could do them, why not you?
Yes, there are tons of them already out there, but not yours. I'd pay good money for such a book, and your other fans would too. Somewhere Russ Manning is saying, "Do it!"

Hey Thanks for your comment. I am a big fan of Russ Mannings work. Probably he, more than any other artist, influenced me into becoming an artist, so it's very pleasing to me that you should bring him up. I did get to meet him before he died, in fact he was probably sick when I met him but of course he didn't say anything. I am so grateful that I had a chance to show him my own work, and he was impressed.

If you can impress your idol with your artwork, that's pretty darn good. Not to mention making you feel about ten feet tall...

you know I always seen art as a way to give back to others in expression, but you met and done more with this little "how to" I like those before me still have some problems illustrating a beautiful woman but will still work on it. Thanks

nvteighen [2010-01-04 11:56:07 +0000 UTC]

The idea behind it is true: Reduce to basic forms. Ok, but you need to practice a lot (photo-reference!) in order to know *how* to reduce *what* to *what* basic forms...

You've described the method used by at least half the amateur artists in America.

Yes, but it could also cause you to blow a fortune on crayons.

Ha ha...I think you got it right with your analysis and the steps you have added. The sketchbook page is sort of meant to be a joke, but it is still my working method. It all does come down to practice and developing accuracy with how you see things and how it is then translated to the paper. Now lets go have a beer and look at SI Swimsuit issues together.

DavidCMatthews [2010-01-04 04:26:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, right... if it was that easy I'd be that good!

It reminds me of the occasional Sunday strip Frank Cho would do for the Liberty Meadows newspaper comic, in which he'd teach you "step-by-step" "how to draw" whatever (Brandy, or an anime-style mecha)... step one is the stick figure, step two is the oval for the head and body, and step three is "add details", and shows a finished drawing detailed within an inch of its life!

DaveMail42 In reply to DavidCMatthews [2011-08-02 04:24:40 +0000 UTC]

I was just thinking of that "how-to-draw" joke of his. I saw the "how to draw a Dachshund" strip and was full of admiration and aggravation at the same time...

The first time I saw something similar was in an issue of Mad magazine way back in the 60's and it has stuck with me. In that issue they started with a very simple circle, added some guidelines in the next drawing, and the last drawing was suddenly the Mona Lisa!

Not so easy if one, like myself, can't draw a straight line without a ruler lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Tarzman In reply to Alex92000 [2010-01-04 14:23:29 +0000 UTC]

Well first off, most people can't draw a straight line without a ruler, so in that regard you are doing jsut fine. In my tutorial page I left out years of practice!

people are organic, so no strait lines are necessary :3
