Hey Tatasz

I tried making this into a linear tile: sta.sh/01f0gnt9ek3l
but I ended up with this: sta.sh/02e6s8k6j6g1 and have no idea why.Β  I didnt get the same shape and ended up with triangles instead :/
Here is the xml: 011ksh44bl8a

If you don't mind can you check it out? Sorry haha Β

tatasz In reply to Xzcouter [2016-06-09 23:25:34 +0000 UTC]

ahhh no worries
Looks like you got the scale wrong here...Β  it should be 0.3333333333 and not 0.5
This makes the pentagons overlap and look like triangles.

Maybe there is some positioning wrong too, but once you fix the scale it should be easier to check.

Xzcouter In reply to tatasz [2016-06-09 23:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Yay after changing it to 0.33333 it worked! Thank you
sta.sh/0252aqtjougk

How do you know the scale?
I think this is why some of my attempts haven't been well. I got the positions and angle down I think. I think I just don't understand scaling.

Is it due to the area taken by one tile? If so why not 1/9 instead of 1/3?

EDIT: Never mind I just found out how xD (square root of the of [small tile area/whole tile area] :3)

Thats sadly true. And so many forget that they not only able to create awesome stuff, they are also very fast, allowing cool motions in almost realtime.

Great instructions! Simple, yet very diverse. As someone else pointed out, I love how these are general guidelines and not steps to replicate a fractal type. I started working on some fractals already.

Barocio In reply to tatasz [2013-03-25 23:04:00 +0000 UTC]

So far, I've rendered two. [link] / [link]

I do have one question. When you did the second example, the half-hexagon, what criteria did you use to determine how many shapes/transforms were going to be included? For example, how come you divided the half-hexagon into four trapezoids and not three triangles?

Anyhow, I did something similar for another image that I still haven't rendered, except it was a half-octagon. I tried making the shape with the triangles' sides on the editor but the flames overlapped, so I figured out that the triangles must be space different and not even touching each other.

Thank you for your help. (=

tatasz In reply to Barocio [2013-03-25 23:44:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, this tutorial is about tilings composed of scaled down copies of themselves, so pretty much a square is tiled with squares, a triangle is tiled with triangles and a half hex is tiled with half hexes.

Of course you can try making up shapes by yourself, but seems like its way easier to use already existant shapes.

For a half octagon, you would need to tile up a half octagon with smaller half octagons without empty spaces and overlaps (which may not be possible... or may be ), and then add one transform for each shape, with corresponding rotation, scale and shift.

To tile something with different shapes, you would need to use some quite nasty xaos, quite beyond the scope of this tutorial.

Barocio In reply to tatasz [2013-03-25 23:54:32 +0000 UTC]

Ooooooh! I see. Wow, it all seems so obvious now. I'll get working on that half octagon right away.
Thank you very, very much! (=

well dunno, to start with, i would make some already tiled up stuff, like sierpinski triangle and things like that.

This is the best tutorial I've seen for Apophysis. It explains in depth on the mathmatical process concerning how to make fractals. While many make tutorials giving you only params and a simple explanation on what these params do, this tutorial actually tells you exactly the math that is involved on how fractals work in Apophysis.

Thank you very much!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tatasz In reply to Kelpalots [2013-03-09 00:43:19 +0000 UTC]

aww thanks... though this math is more related to how the tile works, but somehow it made clearer to me how fractals work overall.
