“OH MY GOD JAX, YOUR GOING TO BE LATE!!! GET UP!” Suddenly Jax jolted awake, inside of the modern lorry’s couch. He sighed and grudgingly walked into the kitchen, wearing a pair of jeans and a white tank. He watched Jess from the small table preparing eggs and toast. DING! The golden brown toast popped out of the toaster and just as it was about to fall, Jess whipped around, egg pan in one hand and now toast in the other. She prepared two plates and walked to Jax. “Here, better hurry if you're going to see Hazy.”Jess said. Jax thought about his tall Paint and Oldenburg mare. A small smile appeared on his face, a rare sight as he thought about flying over the tall jumps. He shoveled the food on his face and hugged Jess. “ Thanks, Jess!” He said as he jogged to the couch, shoving on a black hoodie with breeches and grabbing his green show coat and helmet. “ I’ll text you when I get ready, ok?” Jax said to Jess. She nodded, focused on cleaning as Jax pushed open the door and sprinted over to the barn. His black hair rippled in the strong winds, the dark clouds looming over him. Millions of bad thoughts piled into his head. What if it rains? What if the show gets cancelled? What if… What if… His thoughts were quickly interrupted by a sharp whinny. Jax’s face lit up and he slowed to a walk. He reached out his slender hand and stroked the velvet muzzle he had known for most of his life. She was his life. Seeker’s Eye, aka Hazy was a mare that Jax had raised as a filly. He bought her for 200 dollars from an adoption auction. The thing is, he bought her by chance. He bought a thin, scraggly filly who had been abandoned and sold three times. Those three times weren’t going to happen again, and he bought the frail filly with determination and incredible luck. She became beautiful, just like her relationship with Jax.
He led the tall, Bay mare into the cross ties. No matter how many times Jax had seen Hazy, he never could get over her. Tall legs, kind blue eyes, intelligent ears, and love. Although she definitely could be a brat ( an immediate trait in all mares ), she also could be a lovebug. After grooming her, he slipped a green saddle pad, quarter sheet, and saddle onto her. And this is an example of when she was a brat. When she felt the weight of the saddle, her ears pinned back. Jax rolled his eyes, knowing what was going to happen next. As he put the girth onto Hazy, she stomped and shook, attempting to remove the saddle. Jax knew nothing was wrong with her, as the result of many clinics, vet visits, and horse psychologists. The only thing wrong with her was her mindset. He tightened the girth loosely, and suddenly all hell broke loose. She kicked the wall and snapped at the air, Jax stumbling backwards. Luckily he caught his balance and watched the mare have a stomping fit. He giggled and went onto putting the bridle into her mouth. However, he had to put on the matchy-matchy ear bonnet first!
After experiencing the chaos of tacking up Hazy, he took off the heavy black sweatshirt and put on his matching green show coat. It was at this time that his new friend, Katie Henderson walked over. “ Hi! How are you Jax?” the unmistakable voice of Katie rang through the stalls as she walked over to him. They chatted for a few minutes as he finished putting his boots on and stroking Hazy. Suddenly Hazy tossed her head up and stuck her tongue out. She was definitely feeling playful and cocky today! Jax tried not to laugh, burying his face in his hands. However, Katie on the other hand died laughing! Jax eventually gave up and laughed too. Katie heard hoof and footsteps nearby, and she waved goodbye to Jax. It was at this time when Anna Henderson, Katie’s sister, walked into the light. She shyly waved hi to Jax, introducing herself. “ Hi, I'm Anna Henderson, Katie’s big sister. I’ll be around if you need help training or warming up your horse.” Jax nodded and told Anna how Hazy could be strong headed as she led Hazy into the indoor arena. When Anna began warming up Hazy, Jax went to the cafe for some lunch.
The loud growling of his stomach was embarrassing, as everyone looked up at him. His pale cheeks turned pink, the whiff of fall foods striking his nose. He walked to the counter and ordered the Italian pasta salad, as he was vegetarian. He also was quick to order a cinnamon sweet potato smoothie. He sat down at one of the small cafe tables, trying not to hark up all of his food at once. He ate the delicious salad and walked out of the restaurant with the smoothie, looking as fashionable as ever. That was until the tripped and some of the smoothie got onto his breeches. He looked like he threw up onto himself! To make everything better, it started drizzling. He groaned and picked himself up, walking to the barn.
As Jax walked into the barn, he saw the bathroom. He remembered the stain on his breeches and managed to clean it, looking as good as new. He walked into the indoor arena, watching Anna lunge Hazy. Of course, the bratty mare behaved like an angel in front of other people. He smiled as she perked her ears and slid to a stop, trotting over to Jax. He stroked her and told her to focus on the lunging. He waved to Anna and walked to the Dressage arena. You see, the dressage arena here was a wonderful place. With the perfectly pearly white fences, they seemed to sparkle in the sun. Except, there was no sun. He wasn’t here to compete in the dressage, but he was here to watch it. The beautiful music ran through his ears as he watched the other competitors dance on their wonderful horses. Time flew by, and it quickly became four o’ clock.
As Jax walked through the dirt path, he spotted Hazy standing in the cross ties. He paid Anna a tip, and swiftly took off the quarter sheet. He unhooked her from the cross ties and swung his leg over her broad back. The sound of horseshoes against concrete was music to his ears. The muffled click-clacking ceased and turned into crunching as he walked into the grass. By this time, it was nearly dark. At once, a magical movement happened. The street lights flicked on one by one, making her coat shimmer. The sound of cheering faded as he zoned in on the jumps. Hazy picked up a working trot, then a canter. A voice came on over the intercoms. “ First up we have the rider, Jax Laneson with his horse, Seeker’s Eye. Today they will be competing in the Grand Prix show jumping event, all the way from Nevada. Jax’s brown eyes narrowed onto the first jump, a Turkey Skinny jump. Clink. Rail down. He shook his head and rode forward at a stretched canter. He heard Hazy snort, as if she said, Pfft, no biggie. You think that will stop me? Well, Hazy proved herself, clearing a 5 ft leaf triple bar oxer. The crowd went wild, cheering in excitement. Hazy went on to clear the rest of the jumps. After the show, Hazy tossed her head and Jax eagerly waited for the results. We will know one day...
