still better than a mac. And any linux distro is also just usable if you're not into gaming. Too much hassle otherwise.

The more people use linux, the more companies are pressed to make their games suitable for linux. Steam does.

Oh, it's OK, if you're just a follower instead of a bold person, then stick with Windows. You know, even in the future, when a starship Enterprise boldly goes to where no man has gone before, even then, there will be people who stay back fearfully and dont move until almost everyone else has done so already.

I'm amazed you just used the idea of interstellar space travel to make an argument against operating systems.

From what I've read so far you don't use Windows because they are an amoral business, that stagnates growth and innovation via a lack of competition. And that standardisation is evil.

All of that is incredibly naive. A company that is successful will not make radical innovations at the risk of losing its investors and cash flow.

Take Coca Cola for a good example. They launched 'New Coke' a long while back, and outrage was the response. Cola tried to innovate, and it was an incredibly poor move.
Even Google, who you could argue are the leading company on the internet when regarding innovation (just look back at the dozens upon dozens of redesigns and integration. Oh, and Google are big fans of uniformity) do not overhaul their entire business model.

Ideals do not run companies, success does. If you want innovation to occur, Theaitetos, complaining about Microsoft to anyone who wants to hear it is not the way to go about it. All it does, as shown, is incite argument and makes you look like a tool. It does nothing. You are the exact opposite of progress, which is what you are saying you are all for.

If that is so, then show it.

calling people out for fallacious arguments then replying with dozens more is also another thing that makes you look like a tool

Steam doesn't develop games, it just sells them. By far not all games on Steam run on Linux. And they never will, assuming anything else is wishful thinking.

That aside, Linux may be an option for a select few who know what they're doing (my netbook runs on ubuntu, actually), but it is not an option whatsoever for the majority, for the simple reason that it's tedious as hell to work with, because absolutely NOTHING works on its own accord.

I'm not pro microsoft or anything, but you can't beat the compromise between customizability and comfort that Windows 7 offers. Simple truth.

KDE can. Quite easily so.

BloodRedFullMoon In reply to Theaitetos [2012-08-19 00:47:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm not only speaking of comfort of use but also of comfort of setup. If you want ANY linux distribution to work the way you want it to, you have to put in a lot of work.
And in the end, it still isn't nearly as versatile, because face it, most software is developed for windows. That's the way it is and it won't change anytime soon, either.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theaitetos In reply to BloodRedFullMoon [2012-08-19 04:17:44 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! And now tell me honestly why that is so, that most software is developed for Windows. Exactly, because Microsoft uses its dominance to make sure that no1 else has a chance to get into the market. Microsoft has successfully prevented almost all forms of innovations on the operating system market. They tell you the story of how Microsoft developed from a small group in a garage – a few nerds with their ideas. And nowadays Microsoft makes sure that no nerd with an idea gets to develop anything. That is why you have basically the same OS now than you had 20 years ago: Even Windows 8 is only marginally different from Windows 95; the optical interface was improved, but the basic architecture remains the same ol' thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BloodRedFullMoon In reply to Theaitetos [2012-08-19 09:48:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but who says that the architecture needs changing? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Nowadays most nerds with an idea don't start from scratch. That doesn't mean they can't accomplish what they were planning to do. It's the same as in science, really. If I want to be a physicist, I don't rediscover the law of gravity, I use what other people before me have already done.

Does microsoft have a near-monopoly in the PC market? Yeah, you can probably say that.
In this area, though, I don't think that's a bad thing. Suppose it was different, suppose you'd have about 10-20 OSs that are about equally strong on the market. You'd have tons of compatibility issues, everybody does their thing and tries blocking out the competition, and the result would be somewhat like what you have on the smartphone market now, just bigger: little communities of users that shun each other and all think the system they run on is the best. There would not be anythink like a PC market as a whole, there would not be widespread applications and programs that run on 95% of all PC users' machines, nothing.
In this case, the fact that there is a dominant system is a good thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theaitetos In reply to BloodRedFullMoon [2012-08-19 17:11:55 +0000 UTC]

No. Competition forces people to be innovative. And as you can see with Linux, system interoperability is a strong factor there. The idea that you need monopolies to have standards is just brainwashing. Look at USB drives, WLAN, cords, ... all standardized. The problem with blocking each other happens only, when you have "big guys" who try to kill competition. The Microsoft monopoly has stagnated the entire OS market. Look at all the other computer areas, where there was no dominance: It flourishes, there are hundreds and thousands of innovations. Look at the last 20 years in computers and you see all stuff popping up, except for things like new OS - thx to Microsoft. Imagine a world without Wikipedia, Google, Tablet PCs, social networking sites, etc. Because we'd be living in such a world, if the practices of Microsoft had been applied in other parts of the pc world too.

And yes, the Windows architecture is horrible. Just take a look at PC magazines, that are aimed at windows users. What will they most say? "Speed up your PC", "Protect your PC against malware", et.al. The windows architecture is cluttered and filled, malware, viruses, trojans, etc. can easily infect windows systems. Stupid programs (like "toolbars", etc.) often install themselves along with other software. And when you search for programs online and want to download them, what does it always say right next to the download button? "This download was scanned with Kaspersky/XYZ" or something, because you always have to watch out for viruses and malware, when running on Windows. And if you want your Windows to run normally, you will have to defragment your hard drive once a week, you have to clean your registry, remove temporary files, run a virus scan weekly, and you have to update all that stuff all of the time.

When I changed to Linux, I thought I'd have to spend a lot of time on getting into it and learning Linux stuff, but... something else happened: I have now MORE time to do the stuff I want to do on my PC, because I don't have to put up with all that maintenance, search, download, virus, defragment, etc. crap. My PC runs flawlessly. I don't need to update my drivers manually all the time. I bought a new laptop 2 months ago and it runs out of the box with Kubuntu. If I were to install Windows 7, I would have to find the original CD that came along with my laptop and install all kind of drivers (like NVidia) and stuff. None of that hazzle for me.

BloodRedFullMoon In reply to Theaitetos [2012-08-19 21:46:23 +0000 UTC]

Windows is only cluttered, slow and weak against malware when you don't know what you're doing.
My PC runs perfectly. It just takes a little streamlining.
Toolbars, for example, never install without there being a checkbox, however hidden. If people are blind enough to overlook it, it's their fault.
Viruses are a non-issue if your system is done right, and I defragment my harddrive once a year. I do a virus scan once a month and I really only update (manually) when it's absolutely necessary, and 'lo and behold, my system works like a charm.

Yeah, a lot of my friends hate on apple. I think it's because they think it's too complicated for them and that makes them angry? Like my friend who started complaining that you couldn't have more than one window open. I'm sure there's other reasons though--I've never had a decent argument over it because all my friends are little kids in high school who think they're the shit :/ I honestly prefer windows 7 because it's easier to work with, and it's majority rule which makes it easier for me to download games and to find help on various things. I still like apple though :3
