Description
Why not? We don't know Birdo's background (Especially after they retconned it so Birdo was actually a girl). For all we know she was a princess herself... Or maybe she's just jealous at the attention the other princesses are getting. Or maybe just caught raiding Peach's wardrobe.Honestly, we actually don't know much about Birdo. Is she a singular dino, a race like Yoshi? Hell, is Birdo a female of Yoshi's race?? (Like that's too weird?? After all Yoshi is a guy but lays eggs). I mean given how limited our knowledge is of femmes in the SMB universe... The only ones who appear outside of the Paper Mario games are Peach and Daisy (Both humans, unlike EVERYONE else), Birdo, and Toadette (Who for some reason reminds me of Smurfette. I mean seriously, short, the only female in a bunch of males with a male patriarch. You'd think she'd be running the show or something. The only examples we have of such extreme sex imbalances are in insect life, where the one female is the "queen" and essentially sits around all day making babies and every whim catered to by working males.... Oy, I'm really overthinking this now, aren't I?). If you add in Paper Mario, you get a femme of every species it seems. From Ms. Mouz to Bombette to Gombette to even female koopas. Makes me wonder if the SMB world females are just so much less aggressive then the males, or if Bowser is just sexist in his recruiting tactics or something...
Wait, what was I talking about? Oh, the picture. Sorry. Either way, I added some shiny effect to try and give it a satiny look, as well as added some egg symbols to reflect her "aspect" (Daisy and Peach both have a flower-like broach on their chest. I expanded on that a little). But overall I tried to keep it close to Daisy and Peach's "princess" gowns. Tho technically her gloves should be white for that....

Lessons Learned: That head angle was actually harder to get then one would expect. So were the hands. Overall tho this picture came together very quickly and I'm extremely happy with it.

I think someone has already said this but....
This Birdo looks much better than the original.
And I say there are female and male Birdos, and female and Male Yoshis. I can prove the Female and Male Yoshis in the Super Mario World Magna. 8D
And in other words, GREAT JOB!!!! 8DDDD

Aye, there's been some back and forth on it. Of course Nintendo has gone from Birdo being essentially a Drag Queen to a femme (Tho some sources note that the big N is being more evasive about calling her Female now) that acts like a drama queen. So really, not a big difference for the one example of the species we know of. That leaves a lot of questions about what the specie actually is, or even if Birdo is one of a kind... I simply outlined some of my odd ideas about it.
As for the pic, I'm glad you enjoyed it. This one is one of the favorite ones I did of this group (Before inventing the Hissi, who are to replace drawing this character. I didn't/don't feel comfortable drawing a character that is owned by someone else).

My policy on letting people color my work is...
Absolutely!! I only have 2 requirements for those who do:
1) My signature remains unaltered.
2) I am shown it (if posted on DA I like to link to it, otherwise I like to grab a copy for my personal files. )
Thassit. Have fun.

LOL. If you manage to find the manual for SMB 2 you will read that birdo is actually male, and wants to look pretty.
HOWEVER, the SMB universe has evolved to imply that birdo is actually yoshi's girlfriend. So keep this in mind.
Yoshi lays eggs, and birdo spits eggs. (so maybe birdo is a male, and yoshi is female) and the human princesses just make birdo angry for applying their gender stereotypes.

Actually this has gone around a bit on some of the comments for the other pictures. I chose to use the more recent versions of Birdo where Nintendo says she's female (who lately that's been put to a question, I chose how I would take it). I actually discussed with one person if it's possible that Yoshi and Birdo are like Seahorses, and the male lays and carries the eggs to term....

I'd like to say that Birdo is a girl, but many people can't seem to make up their minds (even nintendo; if I remember correctly, Birdo was reffered to as "him" in the booklet for the last mario strikers or something).
To avoid stupid commeents on my artwork, I usually go with the theme that there's a race of Birdo's and make my own versions up. T'is much funnier to draw several Birdo's, plus I like the paper mario/cartoon-theory that every species has it's males and females (because the notion of female Bob-omb's amuses me).
The pic? Love it, just like your other Birdos.

They can't, but _I) don't care. Far as I'm concerned, Birdo is a girl and I plan to keep it that way (For some reason it makes more sense, plus I like it better, that way).
And yes, Pink Bob-ombs are in themselves an amusing idea. Tho I still stand by my theory that Birdos are the female of the Yoshi species... thus literally you have 2 species co-dependant on each other to procreate.
And thanks, glad you liked it. This was a personal favorite of the series...

While possible, Birdo doesn't seem to quite have those chops in the games to even handle the Princess, much less who might come to rescue her. Of course if she did, she might risk getting kidnapped herself by a Bowser (or other villian) who simply was grabbing the princess without looking...

Actually with many species of bugs the workers and the queen are all female and in some instances (like the driver ant) the male is a different species of insect.

π: 0 β©: 1
TCPolecat7 In reply to Jeffburjr [2009-06-10 04:06:09 +0000 UTC]
Think like Seahorses, with some modifications. Male lays the eggs. Female fertilizes them. I figure the "egg-shooter" snout is to re-feed the egg to the Yoshi, and then re-lays the now fertilized egg (Since Yoshi's lay eggs off of anything they eat) and voila. It's already been shown in past games (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) that as a species Yoshis have a strong maternal instinct, yet Nintendo insists they're male....
