Description
modelled in sketchuprendered in kerkythea
a little post pro in gimp
As I seem to have a little interest in this piece I thought i'd flesh out the description a bit.
The main props for this work goes to the software, none of which cost me anything.
Sketchup - easiest 3d modeller ever
kerkythea - this is free and is unbelievably capable piece of software. the kt forums are a brilliant source of info and the resources provided by the users are excellent. search it out cos if you aren't using it now you will be!!
Gimp - who needs photoshop, i mean seriously... who need that over priced crap (feel the hate!)
I was intending to submit this to a 3d world magazine speed rendering competition. however i soon realised i would not get it done in time for the deadline so slowed up and took my time.
still haven't got the feel of the fabric box lining right... that will come with time... or not, working on something else now... watch this space!!
anyway thanks for all the comments/faves/adds/llamas and watches, and i will get round to thanking you all, it just might take a while and i have modelling and rendering to do!

And you certainly deserve to be!!
I'm going to add to the list of people that honestly thought that your render was a photo... And desperately wishes that it wasn't at the same time.
Congrats on the DD
Sure as heck well deserved

My mind was just blown when I say it was 3-d art and not a photo.
Looks awesome.

Wow, I thought this was real until I saw your comment. Great job, especially the lighting! (it's what usually gives things like this away)

Personality, I use Maya, but for free, I think Blender3D probably beats a lot of programs in functionality.

yep its digital! now all i need is one of those 3d printers so i can start churning these out!!
quick straw pole... how much would you pay for one of these?

strike that even 3d printing would be too expensive

Actually, you can buy a nice 3D printer for about 5,000 now. And if you live in a big city, I bet you could find a place where someone has one, maybe a college.

yeah.... i live in the countryside... uk... back of beyond
you can send your models to online printers and you're looking at about 300-500 per print, this would have to be done in several bits, with painting and assembly you're looking at well over 1000 per model... hey if any one wants one... let me know!

Excellent work on the materials. I think you need to adjust the box's material (give it a faloff reflection model), and the purple velvet thing, it is too flat. Maybe some noise and rounding of the corners offset so it looks more like cloth. The gun itself needs some work on the blue-ish part ner the handle, but for the rest the metal material and the blue glass is brilliant.

great work so happy to see such great work from three free programs, one suggestion is possibly making the purple area more plush feeling. either a different material in kerky or using the make fur plugin in sketchup.
But that is some very nice work.

Many thanks
i tried everything i could to make it plush, bevelled edges (shape was too complex would you believe)make fur just slowed my pc down to a halt. still new to kerky really but i ended up using a velvet material. may be a bump map would help things or a less complex tray.
thanks again
