Description
modelled in sketchuprendered in kerkythea
a little post pro in gimp
As I seem to have a little interest in this piece I thought i'd flesh out the description a bit.
The main props for this work goes to the software, none of which cost me anything.
Sketchup - easiest 3d modeller ever
kerkythea - this is free and is unbelievably capable piece of software. the kt forums are a brilliant source of info and the resources provided by the users are excellent. search it out cos if you aren't using it now you will be!!
Gimp - who needs photoshop, i mean seriously... who need that over priced crap (feel the hate!)
I was intending to submit this to a 3d world magazine speed rendering competition. however i soon realised i would not get it done in time for the deadline so slowed up and took my time.
still haven't got the feel of the fabric box lining right... that will come with time... or not, working on something else now... watch this space!!
anyway thanks for all the comments/faves/adds/llamas and watches, and i will get round to thanking you all, it just might take a while and i have modelling and rendering to do!

Wow!
Did you individually add minor layout flaws to the floor boards yourself? The floor lighting in the upper right is what sold me on the reality of this image. This really fooled me!
Awesome work!

the floor is a standard kt material would you believe.

I could have sworn. If I would have never read the description, I would have never known that was a 3D model. Ever.

I like the graininess in the dark portions of the render, it makes it look like a real photo. On the whole, the lighting is good as well.
There are two things that I see right now that seem a bit off. The bottom edges of the box are too sharp, I think. It makes the box look as if it continues through a perfectly cut hole in the floor, or that it has been cut out of an image and pasted on top of the wood surface below. Also, some of the boards that are behind the box's shadow still have a slight glow on their edges that are facing the light source. This adds to the appearance that the box has been pasted on top another picture.
When one looks at the picture as a whole, it looks realistic, but focus on the bottom, it looks a bit off.
Also, does that thing have a safety? just wondering

kt has this excellent render setting called MLT which reproduces the graininess beautifully. I can't really describe how it works but i'll have a go, it seems to fire groups of photons so that a grainy image gradually appears out of darkness, its quite enthralling to watch actually unlike the depixellisation of raytracing and the like.
I know what you're talking about with the bottom of the box, i did what i could with bevel mapping. i did briefly consider lifting the whole thing up 1mm to see what happened but never got round to it... hey ho!
on the subject of a safety... i did consult with the inventor, Prof. AJG Wellsby, and he seemed shocked that "...someone stupid enough to need a safety would be in a position to use the aetheric volume disrupter, which is after all a gentlemans sidearm and not the plaything of thugs" (his words not mine)

I'm with dumbledorkus, this is an incredible render. I've heard the best compliment a CG guy can get is that nobody knew it was CG. I have wood flooring in my house, and this looks quite convincing.
Good-lookin' gun, too. I love the trigger design. The glowy-floating thing is awesome.

I think it's absolutely amazing. You have great lighting; good reflections and refractions with your materials. The only thing I would fix is that tangent with your box and the floor board line and maybe round off the sharp edges of the purple stuff a little bit if it is supposed to be felt. Other than that this piece is great.

you're the second person to point that out, I definitely modelled a keyhole and pin, its not showing clearly though... maybe a darker material in the whole section.
thx for the comment

On-The-Fly In reply to Technohippy [2010-08-23 17:01:28 +0000 UTC]
you're welcome. I was actually asking myself if it maybe just were the angle that made it look like there was none, but the wood at this point still was too light.
Don't take that critique too serious though, because I really was wondering for a minute if you might not had really build this „gun“, put it in a chest and afterwards rendered some effects onto it, what means that it looks veeery authentic

Ooops! Sorry read the comment above me and your answer. Just forget what I said about the plush part.
I also meant to say I loved what it is called!
"Quick! Grab the aetheric volume disrupter!" This brings to mind some high drama.

This reminds me of the Myst video game. I full expect to see a rendered hand reach down and pull the thing out of its case. I like how the inside of the barrel is glowing.
I agree about the purple lining;to make it more "velvety" and perhaps a little looser, with fabric gathering in the curves of the object. Other than that minor thing;this is game-worthy to me!
