Description modelled in sketchup
rendered in kerkythea
a little post pro in gimp

As I seem to have a little interest in this piece I thought i'd flesh out the description a bit.

The main props for this work goes to the software, none of which cost me anything.

Sketchup - easiest 3d modeller ever
kerkythea - this is free and is unbelievably capable piece of software. the kt forums are a brilliant source of info and the resources provided by the users are excellent. search it out cos if you aren't using it now you will be!!
Gimp - who needs photoshop, i mean seriously... who need that over priced crap (feel the hate!)

I was intending to submit this to a 3d world magazine speed rendering competition. however i soon realised i would not get it done in time for the deadline so slowed up and took my time.

still haven't got the feel of the fabric box lining right... that will come with time... or not, working on something else now... watch this space!!

anyway thanks for all the comments/faves/adds/llamas and watches, and i will get round to thanking you all, it just might take a while and i have modelling and rendering to do!

Holy cow! The lighting and detail on it, it's incredible! How long does it take to make something that epic?

the raygun about a month of evenings, the mobile phone 6 months of the same. most of that was materials and lighting.

Many Thanks i like it when people think its real

good luck with your course, free software like sketchup, kerkythea, Topmod, sculptris and the gimp should be in every students arsenal.

Apparently a carpenter/architect friend of mine thinks he could make it, but the man hours and cost would be atrocious

Don't know much about kerkythea, however you should have made it render it a bit longer, it still is bit noisy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Technohippy In reply to DarthBartus [2010-08-26 08:24:12 +0000 UTC]

I kind of like the noise, when I look at some photos from film cameras, they appear quite noisy.

I would encourage any 3d artist to at least look at kerkythea as it is free. for the price you get great results.

I'm sorry but i don't agree with the suggester. If this looks "realistic" then a thousands of other deviations would be also a daily....think about it...
However... all the important suggestions already have been made...

Technohippy In reply to FanatiX [2010-08-24 08:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I look at it and see the imperfections and cues that its a model, i don't see the realism. but then i'm used to looking at 3d models. there are plenty of more realistic things out there, but i guess art is subjective and you like what you like

I thought at first it was a simple photo.
I then realized it was a 3d rendering, yelped in amazement, and then disturbed the peace in a Starbucks at 10:15pm.

You have GOT to be kidding me? Screw the fabric idea! I thought it was in molded plastic or laser cut foam. I was sure this was about working with various metals and blowing glass!! I would NEVER have taken this to be nothing less then tangable! The lighting is supurb, the floor even has spaces between the boards, the vanishing point is well thought out, and the glint and gleam off of the glass INTO the inside of the box totally had me fooled! I was sure it was a really great object up for sale. Even the brass plate has an appropriate 2-3 dimentional 'feel.' The only thing I noticed, is that the keyhole isn't there. But then again it could just be there for ambiance.(as many modern pieces of furniture do) I'd like to nominate you as Captain of my Star Cruiser!!! Way to GO!!!!!!!!

Technohippy In reply to AtFirstPlush [2010-08-24 08:32:59 +0000 UTC]

thx for the comments!

gotta ask though does it really look like there is no keyhole? cos there definitely is, I know cos i spent an age modelling the keyhole and the keyhole pin. is it just that the hole isn't dark enough?

What impresses me most about this image is that you've made a good case for ingenuity with entirely free software, shooting down those who believe that the better the software, the better the artist. Talk about a compelling argument (though I do love Photoshop).

I should say, also, that when I clicked on this, I initially thought it was a photo of a cool steampunk prop, but was surprised to find that it is in fact a 3D render. Fantastic work!

drhobo1987 In reply to Technohippy [2010-08-25 01:10:47 +0000 UTC]

actually I like the dev, dont get me wrong, but i think the hole is not only dark enough, also is not deep enough. I dont truly know the "size" of the box, but if it is a gun, i can somewhat imagine the box size. I think the keyhole plate is really thin (space enough to the key to fit or even turn)

Technohippy In reply to drhobo1987 [2010-08-25 09:27:55 +0000 UTC]

Fair comments! I was pretty happy with the proportions as the were based around a box I have already. Tell you what though, a lock of that sort wouldn't work terribly well on that box... everytime you pick it up I suspect the lid would open.

hey ho perfection next time!
