You should try to start using wood stains instead of hand shading, it looks a lot more consistent.
Also, even if it's more expensive, you should do nicer pieces on basswood, the grain of pine really shows through, and sometimes not in a good way.

Yeah, I think that's what I'm gonna try for the next piece I do. The hand shading stuff just isn't working out that well. I'm probably gonna go back over the hair again and try to fix it up a bit.
