Description
LMFAO.Okay okay okay. Before anyone decides this is "animal cruelty", I want you all to think about the tiny little dogs that get toted around everywhere and who's paws never touch the ground. XD Zeke is spoiled to bits. He's going to put up with his costume for ONE day at an event, and he won't even be wearing it all day. It's more or less for a TV news thing, and maybe for the pet costume contest.
The costume is held on with EXTREMELY CHEAP double-sided tape. It peels off VERY easily and does not irritate him. Trust me, I tested it before I even began to work on the costume. I, in no way, want to injure my beloved Zeke-boy.
But anyway. XD Zeke in a top hat and monocle. Because it's freaking awesome. The top hat is made from stiff felt, with a little bit of ribbon around it to make it look fancy. The monocle is made from jewelry parts. The chain has a little bit of wire looped through it so I can adjust it to keep the monocle out of his eye. The monocle frame also has plastic over it to act as a lens, because it's all about the details
So basically, Aileen, the big-boss at work wants Zeke on TV to help promote the March for the Animals. I suppose he's supposed to show there is diversity at the March? I dunno. But all the dogs that are gunna be on TV are gunna be dressed up D: And I was all "Awww... Zeke's gunna be left out!" So I came up with this, lol. Having the monocle attached to the hat was not my idea; Amy at work suggested it because I expressed concern about wanting a monocle but being afraid to tape it close to his eye.
It was completely handcrafted by me without any patterns/reference. XD
We'll see how the day goes, lol. He didn't seem to mind the test-wear; and as I said, it'll only be for a couple of short periods
Note: Sorry for the blurry focus. The picture was taken with my phone camera. :/

Aww, thanks <3 Zeke is a good tool for getting over your fear. I've had lots of people over the years touch and hold him, even though they were afraid of snakes. He's just a really calm and tolerant guy; perfect for that!

Oh, he does, trust me! I take him out to events all the time, because he's so trusting and well tempered. He's even had little children, and I'm talking 2-3 year olds, handle him and bounce around with him and squeeze him.. and otherwise harmlessly abuse him as children tend to do; and he puts up with every bit of it. He's such a great learning tool to help people realize that reptiles and snakes in particular aren't the scary monsters that the media makes them out to be :3
Tomorrow, he'll be on TV! Dunno how, really... I don't know if I'm being interviewed, or just in the background, or if someone else will be holding him; but he's supposed to be on television to help promote the March for the Animals, lol. XD So then he'll REALLY be helping to spread the word!

TehAlbi In reply to Kageh [2010-04-18 02:27:17 +0000 UTC]
Oh god yes. People really need to be educated about Gliders. There's this small band that comes around here, and they come about to a lot of the expos and stuff in Maryland... and I understand they're trying to teach people, and educate people on Gliders; but they're doing it all wrong. I'll pass them by and see hoards of people staring at the poor Gliders, and meanwhile the people running the show are all "Oh yes, they make great pets, and they're very easy to care for!"
Um excuse me? Aren't you forgetting that they're EXOTICS. God forbid you talk one of these people into getting a baby without explaining the whole socialization process to them, or about the costs of vet care if it gets sick. I mean, seriously.. I'll be the first to say that snakes are easy to care for -IF- they are well socialized and healthy. But I always warn people about the problems with health care for them. There is ONE vet that I know about out here, and he's only in the office on certain days and for certain hours, and it's $75 JUST for a basic exam, this excludes any medications of procedures done. People need to know about that before they're suckered into buying an exotic animal. :/ Which is why I like to sucker them in with my pretty snake... so I can educate them properly, lol.

I'm sooo happy you recongized they were doing it wrong! *hugs*
half the time they are sick and they sell them waaaay before they open their eyes when they come out of the pouch. Or they sell them way to young. They even change their name to sugar bear. To trick people to look up the wrong info.
I hate it when people buy an exotic pet and never take it to a vet "because they don't need one" that is a bunch a bull. I am in school to be an exotic vet just for this reason and that I adore exotics.

TehAlbi In reply to Kageh [2010-04-18 18:06:45 +0000 UTC]
I know. x_x I tell people all the time that exotic animals don't need vets the same way dogs and cats do, simply because they don't get vaccinations, but they still need vets for times when they become injured or sick. It's still something you need to research DX An exotic animal is an exotic animal for a reason. Whether or not it's easy to care for has nothing to do with the fact that it's EXOTIC and is going to need some sort of special care or handling sometime during it's life that you need to be prepared to supply to that animal. :/
That would be awesome to be an exotic vet. I've thought about it; but I love my job too much right now to move into that. X3

Ferrets actaully have to get a yearly vaccinations.
I knooooooow! God, I hate it when I see people feeding their sugar gliders cat food which kills them over time. It really bugs me. They get very stained (from bad diet) and people think it's a new COLOR! When it's NOT! I hate it because people dont know what they are getting into.
I love my job at the small pet store. I might end up having to change majors since I already goofed up with my grades. I have to retake chem 1 and they will still see my bad grade with the good one and that will hurt me when I try to get into vet school..

TehAlbi In reply to Kageh [2010-04-18 20:23:03 +0000 UTC]
Well yeah, Ferrets... they're one of the few exceptions though. Ferrets can also be spayed/neutered. A lot of other exotic pets can't be, or usually aren't.
But urg, that must be aggravating x_x I know very little about Gliders, myself. Only very basic knowledge from people I've met who own them and love them to pieces. But I know enough to tell that they -are- exotics and need to be treated as such.
Oh no D: Yeah, that's pretty much why I haven't gone to college yet. I fail at math... utterly. And I know I'd have to do well in math in order to become a vet of any sort |D

Male gliders and (both genders)rabbits can be spayed and neutered too. *knows a lot about exotic pets, at lest most* But if you spay a feamle glider it will die.
Oh I know. I would be the crazy glider lady when I get older. rofl. I love them sooooo much.
Oh I know. You have to go through calc. too. Which I have no problem with. I'm going good in Trig right now. Just chemsitry is really hard for me. the labs are like perfect scores but the lecture I'm like.. failing..

I came up with the idea at work (I work at an animal shelter, so we're all about being silly without actually injuring/stressing our animals) and everyone was all "You have to do it!"... so I did. XD

Oh, I definitely do. I absolutely love my job, and have become involved in every part of it, from behavior assessing the dogs that come in to make sure they're safe to place into the adoption program and adopt out, to euthanizing those who are aggressive/sick/injured (we're fortunate that we don't euthanize healthy, adoptable animals, and never euthanize for space). I seriously couldn't think of a better job for myself. The work can sometimes be a little repetative, as it includes a lot of cleaning and maintaining of the shelter environment and animal's health during the duration of their stay; but I love the fact that I'm helping to keep everyone healthy and helping them find new homes <3 I couldn't ask for a better job.

D'aww. That sounds wonderful. There's nothing better than actually enjoying what you work as. ;D
It reminds me of my work experience at a small animal shelter/sanctuary. I really didn't like it, though it was probably because of the people, and because manual labour (lots of cleaning as you probably know) wrecks me up.
But yes, keeping everyone healthy, happy and giving them hope for a new home is wonderful! Lucky you. ;D <3

TehAlbi In reply to Littlelinky [2010-04-25 02:39:37 +0000 UTC]
Haha, the manual labor was terrible when I first started. I hurt so bad, and was seriously debating 'can I do this?' But I wanted the job so badly that I went through with it anyways, lol. And I'm glad I did, cause I really do love my job <3
I'd love to be able to work at a small-scale place. We only deal with cats and dogs, and they do need help, but I'd love to be able to reach out to the exotics community too if I ever got the chance. X3

Animal cruelty be damned this is friggin ADORABLE. Double sided tape is probably the most humane thing you could have used, I mean hell if he want to he can take it off easy enough. Don't worry about the peta-rds. Looks really good.

TehAlbi In reply to bishi [2010-04-18 00:39:48 +0000 UTC]
Oh, definitely. I was wearing a hoodie at the time of the test-wear and as soon as he entered my hoodie pocket, the hat came right off, tape included. I made sure to get the cheapest tape I could possibly find. Just enough to hold the hat on, really; and the tape sticks better to the hat then it does his head, so there's really no worries about it getting stuck to him to where I won't get it off. It probably helps that he just shed last week, so his skin is nice and strong and healthy. :3
But yeah XD Just figured I should lay out the fact in case someone decides to complain, lol. I'd never injure my own animal for my amusement, I love them all way too much for that.
He's so hilariously handsome, though. XD And he puts up with so much. Zeke is the best snake I could've ever asked for, lol. *loves him to pieces*

Thats one thing I love about corn/rat snakes, they can be incredibly well tempered and loving to a degree, even though scientists argue they lack the perceptive parts of the brain to determine who a caretaker is. I think they're full of it. They recognize on some level, they just don't show it like cats, etc.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
TehAlbi In reply to bishi [2010-04-18 00:51:29 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes X3 Zeke has always been incredibly well tempered. I take him out everywhere. He's such a great tool to help teach people that snakes aren't the horrible things the media makes them out to be. :3
And that's about how I feel too. I know Zeke would readily accept most anyone who feeds him and loves him as his owner; but snakes are smarter then people give them credit for. Both of my corns react to certain hand movements that I've used repetatively with them, and while I'm not sure I'd call it "training", it's something that most scientists, I'm sure, would find something to argue about. Zeke knows if it's food time or play time by how I take him from his tank, and he knows that certain touches mean to calm down, which is what I've so far trained my second corn Tada, as well.
Scientists just like to find any way they can to prove that animals are "dumber" then us, just so they can continue to feel superior I don't pay them any mind, anymore.

They can make great pets if you know what to expect from them. Corn snakes, especially, are great starters. They're one of the most docile snake breeds, and are relatively easy to care for. Once the tank is set up, it's more or less all about maintanence and then just feeding/socializing the snake. They can be quite interesting, but you can't really expect them to "love" you. They're very curious, and each have their own personality, but they snakes are more about their instincts and needs then their emotions. :3
Try doing a little research, though, and see if you like the idea of them. I've had Zeke for 6 years, and I've loved every minute of it, personally. <3
