Pen Vs Pencil:
Personally I use pen, because it's strong and I always do my pictures in soft colours. If you're hoping to paint, in gouache or something solid, it might be best not to have outlines. But if you're using something like watercolours or pencil crayons, pen might be better. It depends on the style you want in the end. Pens can smudge, but if you go out the lines a bit when colouring, you can't see it that much. You can't rub out pen, which is bad if you make lots of mistakes, but good because it makes rubbing out construction lines easier.
