btw as im kind of new to dA, can you tell me how to change my icon/profile picture -- its just blank at the moment and im stuck... please help!

Well I'd suggest visiting the helpdesk for your problems, it's usually located at the very bottom of any page on DA, and it's labeled "Help & FAQ" there you can type in keywords involving your problems (such as "icon").
However, to upload an icon/avatar, you go to your front page (and right now I'll tell you to make sure your internet browser is updated and the newest version) and then scroll your mouse over to the right over submit devation, submit print, etc, etc. It should reveal more options, click on "Edit Settings and Profile" on the far left click "Identity" and follow the guidlines for an avatar there :3

Also, there are some other interesting things about DA, such as user ID's and +watch's. Do you know about either?

A User ID is a little image on your front page right above your stats (ie, Age, Residence, Likes and Dislikes) it can be anything from a picture to an artpiece, but to use it you have to file it under DeviantART Related > DeviantID, under "Category" when you submit or edit a deviation, mind you, it's best if the ID is small and taller than wider, since bigger ID's will look partically cut off. Once you do that, you then go to edit your profile, select User Display on the left column and select your ID from the pull down menu, you can also fill in as much or as little info on yourself here as you want.
Now a +watch (or a watch), is something you click on, on a person's page, when you click the "watch" button, then you will automatically be alerted whenever that deviant submits art or journals. Pretty much it's an easy way of seeing all the art from the artists you watch in one place so you don't have to keep their DA's bookmarked and browse them now and then. You can also choose what you watch them for, when you watch somebdy it'll link you to your watch list, where you have checkbox options that you can fiddle around with. Say you want to watch an artist for just their art, because they're journals aren't that great, if you deselect the journal option, you'll never receive their journals.
Also be noted that all Deviant's have a "scrap" gallery, which varies for each person but generally consists of sketches, WIP (Work. In. Progress.) Pictures, or other less grand things. But you won't be alerted if a Deviant you watch submits something to scraps unless you check the "scrap" button when you view your watchlist (aka, it's not manually selected when you watch a person).
Also, you have the option of selecting who are your friends among your watchers, this isn't really important unless you buy a subscription, when you have a sub, there will be a box on your page showing the avatars of all the people you have selected as friends, thus making visiting their pages quicker.
