Description
Since discovering with the help of =ArmadaRyu that Micron pens don't run when you paint over them, I've been having an insatiable urge to watercolor! I also thought it was about time I got back into the swing of the #ATC-Exchange weekly challenges, PLUS I needed to draw me a Harper because he gets no love.2.5"x3.5", watercolor, white gel pen and ink on bristol.
On the off chance that anyone wants to purchase this bad boy, send me a note and we can work something out.

Thank you! I really do love Harper, in spite of the fact that I almost never draw him. I really should do him more, because that leaf hair always makes me happy!

That's great. Can't wait to see more of him. It's always nice when you love to draw your characters.

I love to draw all my characters, it's a little sad. I'm so addicted! I'm just glad I'm apparently not boring everyone.

Not sad at all. I'm the same way. I don't think you could EVER bore us with your incredible work.

Thank you! I'm glad you think so, I was really pretty pleased with this one because normally I don't do such complicated rendering with paint, but my first time was a bit of a success!

YESS, I was totally thinking I needed to give him some art-love. He doesn't get nearly enough of it. Glad you like the colors, I was trying something different with the shadows and the rendering, so I'm glad it was a successful experiment!

I really like how you do the face, and the details and shapes in the body (eg. the muscles in the arm, the material folds in the clothing, it looks ace.) Does he have leaves for hair?

temiel In reply to the-lest [2010-03-30 14:59:30 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I've actually never done such tight rendering with paint before, but all the digital experimenting I've been doing lately made me a good deal more confident in my shading. He does indeed have leaves for hair-- he's a Xelosian, which is similar to an elf except they're symbiotically connected with plant life.

This reminds me of Treasure Plant! I love the background! This is very well drawn! Is that wite out pen? Or paint? I've noticed a lot of people are using white out pen lately. >__>

temiel In reply to TheDevilsBlush [2010-03-29 20:46:52 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Astral Arcana, of course, got a LOT of its genesis from Treasure Planet, so the similarity isn't just a coincidence.
The stars done with a white Gelly Roll pen on top of the dried watercolor. I like the gel pens because they're not quite as clumpy as a white-out one, but still decently opaque. =chen-san uses white gel pens for highlights ALL over the place to great effect.

Indeed it does! I'm glad you like the look, I've really been enjoying these little cards lately. They're small enough that it's really quick to finish so you don't get bored, and working this size is definitely a challenge. If you feel so inclined, I recommend it!

Small can be fun at times... I was mainly intrigued by the water coloring, though. Feels like a weird challenge to take up sometime for myself.

Is the character yours?
You always put so many details in tiny papers like this!! I like how you did the stars! Is it white ink?

temiel In reply to AmaDenchArt [2010-03-28 22:31:44 +0000 UTC]
Aw, yay! I'm so glad you like it. Yes, his hair is indeed made of all leaves. He's a Xelosian, and they're similar to elves except they're symbiotic with plants. He's mine insofar as any of these guys are mine-- Alan made him up, but I designed him. He's on Rian's crew and I haven't drawn him in WAY too long.
The stars are done with one of those Sakura Gelly Roll pens, I just used the white one. Pretty convenient!

I wouldn't have put him down as a bit of a jerk, but there you go, what do I know! I like the starry sky - I know it's an easy one to do, but it looks good
π: 0 β©: 1
temiel In reply to Larissa-Bright [2010-03-28 11:55:17 +0000 UTC]
He's not a SERIOUS jerk (at least, not in the same way that Malachi's a jerk, or even Pirossa), he's just embittered and REALLY sarcastic and has a whole lot of walls you have to break down (or bypass, or dig under) to get to know him. Once you do, he's awesome. When she became captain, Rian would have made him her first mate except for the fact that he didn't particularly want the job because it'd mean he'd have to actually talk to people.
Glad you like the sky... I wasn't exactly sure how well I'd be able to pull it off with watercolor, but here we are. Originally when I was working on it I had a lot more planets in the background, but I forgot about them when I was painting and then, of course, I couldn't paint over or take the color away that was already down.
But I think it turned out okay nevertheless.

Thank you thank you, they certainly are. It took me YEARS to discover the Microns after having used the Staedtler Lumograph pens and occasionally the Faber-Castell pens and croquils most of my inking life, and none of them are as convenient, expressive or properly small as the Microns.

Huhuuu, thank you!! I forget, this is probably the first time you've seen this guy! I almost never draw him nowadays for reasons I can't quite figure out, because I used to draw him a lot. He and Rian have a really cute friendship (used to be friends with benefits, but it was never more than that). As it is, he and Rashida sound like they're perfectly matched in the "stick shoved up the bum" respect; he accepts affection from VERY few.
I'm really glad you like it!! It was a lot of fun working on him, very zen. Gave me an excuse to use my teeeeeny brushes!

He is quite charming, isnt he?
By the off-chance, do you fancy the work of Wendy Pini as well (have we had this conversation?!)? Its the cheekbones. I love cheekbones!
I like the use of warm shadows here as well. I'm trying to convince myself to do the same.
MICRONS! You are now entering your Micron phase! Everyone has one (I think).

temiel In reply to MNat [2010-03-27 22:49:56 +0000 UTC]
Aff, thank youuuu. I really enjoyed drawing him a while ago, but then he sort of fell out of favor for no particular reason. It was good doing him again!
We have NOT had this conversation (though I know what you mean, I know I've had some conversations multiple times with multiple people). I'm actually not huge on Pini... the most of her stuff I've seen has been her work on ElfQuest, which I wanted to like but didn't because of the art. It's the giant eyes/heart-shaped faces thing, I think; I generally like more of a jaw and chin. But you're right, she does love the cheekbones (as do I ).
Do you have an inking tool you like better than Microns? I've used the Staedtler Lumograph pens, the Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens, nib pens, and those ultra-ultra thing Copic microliners, but of all of them I just like the Microns best. None of the mess of dip pens, more tip variation than the Faber-Castell, and they don't wear out as quickly as the Staedtler and the Copic.

MNat In reply to temiel [2010-03-28 01:31:10 +0000 UTC]
Microns are defiantly my favorites when it comes to inking but its been a while since Iβve used them, unfortunately. Before that I used crow-quills but, like you said, theyβre a mess. And I would always end up with huge blots and splotches and trashed nibs . But when I discovered icrons I used them like mad! It was my micron period
...somewhat like Picassoβs Blue Period
I think back on page 2 of my gallery thereβs a chunk of work all done with micron inking...but its not very expert.
I stop inking things in an attempt to convince myself to focus on form and modeling. My work for the most part is very linear, so I was having a difficult time painting convincing 3-d shapes. So, I stopped letting myself use inked line on paintings. I have a box full of red and blue microns that I would love to find an excuse to use but currentlyβ¦I have none. x.x I havenβt inked in so longβ¦Iβd probably lame it all up.
I do know people who use Rapidograph pens, but I think those are equivalent to the Straedlter ones. They have very little line variety because theyβre meant to be technical pens.

temiel In reply to MNat [2010-03-28 11:42:20 +0000 UTC]
Ah, yeah, I do that sometimes. For lineless form and modeling, though, traditional media has completely fallen out of favor with me; if I ever want to practice with that, I use Photoshop. I used to be diehard into traditional media, but I HATE mess and especially things like thick paint, so once I learned better how to use it, I gravitated to pristine, cleanup-free digital stuff. I've played with lineless work every now and then, but really, I'm just so in love with line that I can't see ever getting rid of it for more than just practice.
