Description
Commission for of her characters Mareina and Canser, two characters who just can't catch a break as far as their relationship goes-- because of conflicting loyalties, they can't be together. SAD! She asked me to convey a "bittersweet" sort of relationship, and I hope I hit the mark.

Thank you! The colors for this one I was actually going by *pinkplaidrobot 's suggestions, so they're stronger than the colors I'd normally pick on my own. I'm glad you like it!

I think you certainly conveyed a sense of longing with the woman, and the man looks very comforting. I like the sunny yellow lighting that you use and you did such a lovely job posing them.

Yeah, they definitely have their place and I'm all for expressiveness actually, I just dislike when people turn expressions into caricatured, emoticon-like versions of expressions and completely ignore the more complex, subtle emotions humans are capable of. (You're in NO danger there. I like how you do expressions.
And you've gotten what, like three commissions done in the past few days? That's definitely progress!

And yeah, I kind of agree with you... sometimes I like a more simplified cartoony style, it can be very cute, but I'm such a sucker for multi-layered psychology I tend to dig the little unconscious facial quirks and I like to put them in as much as possible. I find that it's people who have a really strong animation influence that tend to do those very simplified expressions, and at heart I'm really just an illustrator.

Yes, it definitely does look like a kind of longing/no can have kind of story - certainly on her half, as she looks far more distressed about it than he does. I do think he is very skinny (which may well be part of his character for all I know!) - it's fine as it is, but if he was much skinnier I would feel compelled to shove cherry scones at the compy

Yes... I'm glad it actually comes across like they have different body types. Variance in body type is NOT a strength of mine, but that's mostly because I have a certain type that I really, really like to look at.

I think I'm the same, to be honest - varying body types is hard. It always looks so... wrong when I attempt it. My men tend to be on the stronger side of normal and my women tend to be pretty standard. Theoretically I know how my character's body types should look... I just don't do it properly.

I'm really glad you think the expressions are good, I tried to be pretty careful with them. What really helped was thinking of all those gooey snuffly Rian/Farael pictures I did way back when, since they had a similar situation going on for a bit.

lol. It's so much awful fun... my first real character NEVER managed to win, haha, and wound up naming his daughter (by his actual wife) after the love. Then his daughter and the love's son wound up getting married, and it was HILARIOUS.
