Description Yay, it feels nice to do another tutorial!! Hope you have the patience to read through it! Let me know if you have questions about things that are unclear. I'm gonna change things later on if I see room for change (and I'll probably put a sample of a final product on there as well). So yeah!

Maybe you can help me...I want everyone to be able to see the tutorial I did without having to download it. How do I do that?

Tentopet In reply to Ennormir [2005-03-10 00:01:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, what format is it in??

Usually, for tutorials, I do lots of screen caps and paste them together to form JPEGs on Photoshop.

Yeah, that's what I usually use. So yes, you know how to screencap? Push the "print screen" button and then paste in Photoshop or MSPaint or whatever? That's how I do it, and I edit it until it's one giant JPEG.

^ That was my previous account, before I asked DA to delete it. So, here I am, years later, telling you I still like the tutorial. I'm refaving it.

This is really great! I'm making a small tutorial on creating costum tones. Could I put a link to this page?

Wow, Tento, this tutorial is really nice!!! But there's one thing I don't understand.... how exactly do you "line up your tones"? Like you did with the circle with two tones? Let's say you're selecting an area and filling it--- did you just select that circle VERY VERY carefully, or is there some method to it?

Also, I can't figure out how to define patterns with the pattern stamp tool. Do you do it the same way as the paint bucket?

Tentopet In reply to findmeashrubbery [2005-02-14 20:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty, so you say you figured out the pattern stamp tool....and you're asking about how to make it line up? Well, as long as they line up when you select the tones to define them as patterns, they'll line up from there on after. Photoshop will have this virtual memory of where the dots would be if they were filled on the whole page, and they line up in terms of that. So you can fill, draw in, whatever, and as long as you defined them in the right way, you'll be fine. Does that make sense? And the way they line up is by selecting the same amount of pixels for each darkness of tone and making sure the dots line up on top of each other so that the transition between the two would just look like the dots are growing or shrinking. And this is how you define them in the correct way. But yeah, after you define them, it doesn't matter how you fill or select or draw, you just pick the patterns and they'll line up.

Now, I'm a dummy and haven't updated my tutorial yet, and someone on another forum informed me of another fun technique of making screentones, and it looks like it may be easier. The only trick to it is that you may want to test it a few times and see if, when you zoom in, all the dots are uniform. Sometimes, the dots aren't completely uniform, but it looks as though you can find some patterns that'll work. Anyway, this doesn't make any sense, but please take a look at his tutorial -->[link]

He also has some different pointers than me that are really useful as well.

Thanks, yeah, I understand what you're saying; i'll be sure to try it. I've tried the bitmap method you linked to and honestly, it looks kinda of strange (or maybe i'm doing it wrong, which it entirely possible ) and I'm not sure how it prints. Oh well. Another thing to try. Thanks again, you're the best

Thank you for the instruction and very detailed information, I was able to follow through and create a set of Halftones. I always wondered how to do this technique when I saw the different books on animebooks.com and How to Draw Manga books etc. so I am extremely happy that I learned something as useful as this. Thank you!

OMGOMG!! Thank you sooo much for this!! This will definitely be put to use! *lol*
I have been er..'debating' so to speak with the comic group that I'm in named 'Hachi', which includes and over whether or not to use traditional or digital toning. And I, of course, being the stubborn butt that I am, wanted to use traditional..*lol* You can ask dizzychii about it..it's been quite a nightmare! But everything's better now, thanks to your tutorial! ^^ I've given in! Hehehe.
Thanks a bunchie!

Nope! I got really lucky! Everyone's been telling me these horror stories on how their friends/cousins/etc had their jaws wired SHUT! >_< I just have some super swallon cheeks! XD Regular chipmucnk now...(all the surgery was done inside the mouth...so nothing to show on the outside)

Well, that's good, at least.

I didn't have that bad of an experience with wisdom teeth since they just took out the bottom two. The top two are sideways in my sinuses!!!! Dunno how they got there...

Yeah, it's taken me a while to get this knowledge--lots of talking around with people online who know what they're doing and whatnot But it was always bits 'n pieces! So I hope to have something that puts all those bits n' pieces together.
