Description Yay, it feels nice to do another tutorial!! Hope you have the patience to read through it! Let me know if you have questions about things that are unclear. I'm gonna change things later on if I see room for change (and I'll probably put a sample of a final product on there as well). So yeah!

...I don't know. I rather LIKE the color halftone way. S: It does work better if you change all the other numbers to 45 or 90 though. Someone may have already said this though... I'm tired, and I haven't read all the comments.

Thank you. This is the second method I will be trying. It looks like I might be able to avoid the resolution issue here. I'll let you know how it goes.

I could just kiss you.... -_- but I won't.

This is one of those things that is SO OBVIOUS, but only after somebody else says it. I got fed up trying to do halftones a few years ago, and NEVER did it occur to me to bust out the pencil tool. kudos to you! Photoshop ftw

Wow, this is by far the best tutorial I've read. You explain things so that even a n00b like me can understand toning. I've always been like: "I can't do that, too hard. T.T"... This is a GREAT resource, and I was following this step-by-step just to see if I understood it correctly -- And what I have in my Photoshop window now actually looks good. Thank you so much for making this, I wish more people with your level of skill would make things like this.

Wow. This was my very wordy way of saying thanks for a very wordy tutorial. :3

It's nice to see a tutorial going more in depth with thoughts and feelings on use of screentones, rather than just a striaght up tut. I'm trying to start in with using screentones in my work and ran into the similar problem as you did with Photoshop's "color halftone" function creating grey dots (instead of black ones).

However... since I'm creating my greys that I turn into tones on a separate layer from my linework... and since I already have to "magic wand" those tones before converting them. I got in the habit of just tweaking the brightness and contrast to thier extremes and eliminating the greys.

So far I'm pretty pleased with the results that method has been giving me... but all in all... I've never messed with screentones digitally before recent... and it's been about 15 years since I tried using zip-a-tone sheets which was short lived because I was a poor kid and couldn't afford many of 'em. I appreciate these days seeing everyone's different approaches to this stuff. Cheers!

Aw, thanks! Yeah, I've learned a bit of stuff since I made this tutorial. There's a great toning tutorial if you click on the "tutorials" section of this forum-->www.popmhan.com/bb

Also, I made sorta a "screentone handbook" that goes more in depth about the printing and all that--past "how to tone"--that might be helpful: [link]

Thanks for reading that tutorial, by the way! And best of luck to you! I still don't recomment the Color Halftone technique because it looks chunky, but the first link here has a great way to convert to halftones

Wow, you've got some awesome information here
...
But just as a fight for those who have Photoshop and can't get the other programs you recommended:
I don't have Internet at home. Or a credit card or a checking account or anything. But I have the Photoshop CS Suite and the Macromedia MX Suite, bought using a student discount.
I bought a How to Tone Manga book, which contains an awesome Computones v3 CD, which is a Photoshop filter (really freakin' sweet) at a comic book store.
Friday I found Manga Studio Debut 3.0, its own program, which is semi-published by Tokyopop, at my local art store. So many people can't order stuff online like me, but I can afford such things, so I try to find things in person. (Am I rambling?)
So maybe others are just like me and either can't find it for purchase, or they can't (illegally) download such rare programs.
So yeah.... um....
I try to buy what I can.... honest....

great tutorial. I've been looking for a way to get the look of the comic works program without actually buying it. this definitely helps a lot. thank you so much!! just one question though: so, halftones are actually just black dots? I've looked through comics, & I could have sworn they were done with some sort of grey tones.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tentopet In reply to Nikki0417 [2006-04-14 07:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Nope--look reeeally closely, they're ALL dots!!! Seriously. I kid you not. BUT! Sometimes people will make things in greyscale and printing companies will convert it into halftones themselves. In that case, the halftones are much finer than what you'll see in typical manga.

BTW, there's another tutorial about converting greyscale into perfectly printable halftones, over at [link] in the tutorials section. Enjoy!

Ohhhh, I get what you mean now! Yes, I do know how. There's a tutorial for it at [link] . It's the toning tutorial in the tutorial section. It shows you hot to take a greyscale drawing and turn it into tones, so to make patterns like what you're talking about, you'd make them first in greyscale (or ya know copy them from pictures or whatever) and then go through the same process he outlines.

I found you through Pseudome (now my favorite forum) so if you see me around, I'm not stalking you, I'm just hyper with the newness.

Tentopet In reply to wasurera [2005-05-24 05:35:39 +0000 UTC]

Understood! I was pretty psyched when I found Pseudome, too I'm not really at that level where I can be "stalked", so don't worry; I wasn't thinking anything of the sort!

wasurera In reply to Tentopet [2005-05-24 06:56:41 +0000 UTC]

Pfah! Were I the stalking type, I'd stalk you in a minute! Just because you're talented and *nice* as an artist. Plus, you're into creating manga, and I've never met a better bunch of people than the ones at Pseudome--who genuinely want to improve until they're at a professional level. I'm about to graduate into the scary world, so having a group like that is a godsend for me.

Tentopet In reply to wasurera [2005-05-24 19:08:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's soooo refreshing to meet people like that. And it seems like everywhere else, people aren't as focused on the actual COMICs side of things. You know there's TP editors there too, right? And people who have book deals?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wasurera In reply to Tentopet [2005-05-24 19:46:20 +0000 UTC]

I knew that some of the people who have book deals are there. I recognized Marty, who's a SCAD graduate (from my college, and my department). I didn't know that there were TP editor's there, though. That's nifty.
It must give them hope for the future of the industry to see so many determined people in the forum.
