Description
Arachne, who was punished for believing her skills as a weaver surpassed those of Athena, the Goddess of weaving, by being turned into a spider and cursed to weave for the rest of eternity.I've made her a humanoid spider woman rather than a straight-up spider because I thought that would be more interesting/fun. She hasn't been mentioned or appeared in my Rise of the Guardians fanfic yet but she'll be popping up soon enough. What's her role? Well, where on earth do you think the Muses got all those fancy outfits they wear?
She and the Muses are good friends and she loves working with them. They always provide her fascinating challenges and of course, endless inspiration. She and Thalia are particularly close, I think.
When I was working on her, I got a suggestion from one of my classmates to look into Edith Head and maybe throw some references to her in Arachne's design and I thought that would be a lot of fun. So the round glasses and blunt bangs (as well as the outfit to an extent) are nods to her. Plus I thought having the extra lenses for her extra eyes would be awesome and it's still my favorite part of the design.
For the record, drawing a character with extra limbs from that many angles sucks.
She'll be the last reference sheet for a while, I think. I want to do Apollo at some point but I don't know what he looks like yet. In the meantime, you should check out my story and my other character designs!
Something Quite Peculiar - Chapter 01
Chapter One: Reminiscing
The cabin could barely be called a cabin. It was more of a hut: a building in the loosest sense of the word. It had four walls and a roof, a door, a window, and a chimney that looked as though it were ready to fall over. Truthfully, it appeared that a strong gust of wind could knock down the shack, with signs surrounding which read, “Condemned” and “No Trespassing.”
The small structure was concealed behind several large trees, and was incredibly easy to miss, nestled within the forest that rarely anyone ventured into.
It was always snowing around this cabin, regardless of the season.
Inside was exceedingly less interesting than outside, if at all possible. There was only one room, which contained a mattress and pillow in the corner, a fireplace that appeared to have not been used in decades, and a few shelves on one of the walls.
The shelves proved to be at least somewhat intriguing, containing items such as a matryoshka do

I was just going to interpret her as having been turned into a more humanoid spider woman in the first place as far as this character goes.

I have a question, after reading the latest chapter (and hearing she makes most of the outfits for the legends), I was wondering if I could borrow her and possibly make a reference to her in my fic? For my main character, Story (spirit of stories), I've wanted for her to have an interesting outfit at a later point. Right now she's still a young immortal, only 6 years, but once she reaches a hundred or so, I wanted her to have a more elaborate wardrobe than normal person clothes. Namely a dress made of paper that turns into her wings when she flies. Learning of Arachne made the light-bulb appear over my head. If not, then I'll find another way to work it in, but just thought I'd ask.

I'm kinda picky about loaning my characters out to other stores, did you plan on writing a scene with her or just mentioning her in passing?

most likely just mentioning her, unless you were ok with a scene. If not, like I said, I'll figure another way to do it. Asking never hurts^^

I'd probably be okay with just a mention, as long as you make note in the description that you borrowed her. Note me when you know exactly how it'll go down?

Wha...? You couldn't make this infinitely more difficult and not give her a epic complicated out fit like the Muses wear? What happened to hating yourself?

I feel like her arms were complicated enough, lol. And even at that, my classmates suggested redesigning her so that I would have to add extra sleeves to the outfit for her arms, siiiigh.

No, I hear you. I would go either blind or insane trying this. Or both.

She might have modified them herself. Or perhaps there's some kind of mythological optometrist somewhere.

The Greek Gods/Goddesses look over a lot of different things. Athena is bets known for wisdom, yes, but she's also the goddess of weaving, courage, law, just warfare, math, and a ton of other things.

When you said Edith Head, for some reason I pictured Edna Mode from the Incredibles. I think Edna was slightly inspired by Edith. No idea.
Anyway, I love the design. I always wonder though, what the skeletal system would look like of a mostly humanoid animal/insect hybrid. It makes me think that her shoulders must hurt a LOT.
Very well done! I know I couldn't do the turn-around so well. I am quite impressed!

Yes, Edna was a tribute to Edith!
Yeah I feel like it's three ball and socket joints right next to each other which must get confusing/uncomfortable. Thank you, though!

Oh my gosh I had to do a project where we had to draw ourselves as a Hindu god/goddess which meant multiple limbs and oh my gosh looking at this gave me instant, cringing flash backs. You poor thing, I'm sorry you had to go through that D: But luckily, I think this one turned out really well done so go you!

Oh no, I'm sorry I took you back to that place! Lol. But yeah it was really entirely my fault, I was the one that decided to draw the spider lady, lol.
Thanks a ton!
