Description I made this last year and it has been on my procrastination list of things to upload forever! This is a glowing LED computer desk that I designed and built from scratch. It has a thick top of oak stained a dark black color that is not too dark to show off the grain a bit in the light as you can see from the middle right image. The lights are from an individually programmable LED strip that wraps around a second layer of plywood that is about an inch smaller on all sides than the top oak layer and the plastic diffusing strips are fastened in grooves and capped on bottom with rounded door trim. The legs come out at angles and the whole desk is very sturdy and probably way heavier than a desk should normally be. The lights are programmable and I can use my phone to change the colors and effects patterns or schedule when the lights turn off and on via a smart plug. They are at about half the maximum brightness in these pictures. I added a picture of the table alone in the dark on the bottom left and bottom right you can see my equally luminous gaming computer setup.

You can't really see the glowing computer insides or my glowing gaming chair from that angle, but I suppose that is off topic from the desk. I am starting to think I am enjoying making things glow a bit too much. I think it might be neat to decorate a whole house to look like a Tron movie. I am going to need a lot more LED strips and power converters though. :/ Anyway, tell me what you think or if you have a neat computer setup as well and if anyone has any questions I can add better descriptions, images, or links to parts I used if you want to try making your own. A mightily impressive craftsmanship you got there. It sure makes for quite the colorful place at night.Ā Ā

Though I'm starting to wonder, how much would you still see of the screen, once it's getting darker in the room and the lights come out?

I guess the lights might be a tad distracting, but the mouse a keyboard are closer to the monitor than the table so they are probably more likely to be distracting. Everything has brightness control though so if I ever had issues with that I could turn the lights down even dimmer. You should see how bright the desk gets at full power though, it makes my whole room light up brighter than my ceiling light does and really outshines all the other glowing computer accessories. It also starts getting noticeably warm though so I think it is probably not a healthy idea to leave it at full power if I want the lights to last years and not start fires or melt the plastic diffuser. The monitor is probably too bright as it is though, I think that is the only disappointment I had with that monitor because even on dark black colors it looks like a glowing grey color and it always feels like it is glowing bright. I guess my macbook had me spoiled a bit with it's great color accuracy. I wonder if this laptop uses an OLED screen or if it is just a really high quality LED. I think it is several years old now so I would guess it is still LED of some sort. This is getting off topic though, the only real problem with my computer setup is how rarely I use it Ā  I kind of feel like one of those old people that slowly drive around in a sports car because this setup is a bit wasted on me right now. If I could teach my cat to become a twitch streamer it would make a great rig for that and she could finally make money to pay for her cat food! Ā

lol, you could totally sell these for a ton of money, says the girl theorizing about such things as it looks amazing! Lots of power strips lol! Is your keyboard glowing too? It looks like a great office!

Yep the keyboard glows too, and so does the mouse, mouse pad, speakers, computer monitor, chair, and every part of the computer except for the hard drives and CPU. I think they make SSD drives that glow so I might need to look into getting one, but getting a glowing CPU chip might be a tad hard since they do not make any that I know of and it would be covered up by the glowing water cooler anyway. XDĀ

I was actually thinking it might be a neat idea to try selling glowing desks if I ever needed to make money. Clearly I already have too more money than sense right now, but with this desk only costing about $200-$250 to build out of solid materials I imagine someone could sell them for twice as much or more and the build price might lower to $150 or less with a more streamlined production and better tools. It would be a great business idea probably because I think lots of people would love desks like this even made from cheaper laminated particle wood and with almost every computer part now having glowing options there is a big lack of good glowing computer furniture on the market. It can be very cheap to buy LED light strips if you ever want to add them to furniture like this and I have seen some pretty neat examples where people have placed them under cabinets and such to add adjustable mood lights that can really transform the room into one that looks a lot more futuristic than most expensive renovations can. You should definitely look into them if you think it might be a neat idea and I am glad you like my desk!

Thank you. Well maybe in the future that might be something you could consider doing. I think people would definitely buy them, but then again, I couldn't sell anything if I tried, and I've tried lol. Personally I have migraines, and could never own one of these, and the glowing stuff makes my eyes hurt. But I still think it looks awesome and if I didn't have this problem I would probably bling out my life!

Yeah, I get terrible migraines too, but mostly when the weather changes and such and it is getting better as I learn to not procrastinate and take medicine sooner for them. Oddly staying indoors seems to help a ton too, but I can see how glowing items would be a bother if you are stuck in bed unable to turn it off. Nothing is worse than blinking lights when you have a migraine, well except for maybe when people talk loud or just loud enough to hear and not understand in the next room or leave the TV turned up. >.< I found there are some great ways to almost completely block out migraine pain using pressure points so I think I might try making an elastic head-band that puts pressure in those spots so I can get more done on migraine days, but hot showers will have to do for now I guess. Hopefully your migraines will get a little better/less frequent in time as well so you can get obnoxiously glowing furniture some day! XDĀ

I guess my biggest fear about selling things is that I would make stuff and they would not sell. The hardest thing about selling things you make is probably not seeing others buying the items you put work into making, but I guess knowing what others want or how to market the items is another big part of selling that creative people tend to be less skilled at. For me at least it feels hard to charge a lot more than an item's cost to make because I feel it was fairly simple and I enjoyed making it so it feels unfair to ask much for my time, but that would make it impossible to really run a profitable store. I suppose I must remind myself that what is simple for me to make may not be so simple or fun for everyone. It is hard to really be a savvy sales person while being cripplingly introverted >.< I'll leave sales up to my cat, everyone loves her!

lol, that's funny. Cats are great. Well, when my face is swollen up like an old peach! lol. Yeah, like singer's have managers so they don't have to deal with sales. Artists should totally have managers too. That way we can just enjoy what we do and leave the selling to someone else. Aw, well. Guess it doesn't work that way, but hey maybe one day. Managers that only get a percentage not that we pay up front... *wink wink* hehehe
