Description
Proceeding with a continuation of fan art of Couples, above is presented a portrait of Roderich Edelstein and Elizaeteva HΓ©dervΓ‘ry, also known as Austria and Hungary, and their union being dubbed as the representation of the Austro-Hungary Empire. The portrait above also serves a dual purpose for an illustration I had proposed to ~evilPersonThing for her upcoming literary fan literature of combining Axis Powers Hetalia with the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical adaptation of "The Phantom of the Opera"
In lieu for a dungeon-like catacomb beneath the opera house, here was chosen a more majestic setting, befitting Roderich's dignified nature or propriety, they stand before a towering window in stately manor, observing the sunset, or actually, observing each other.
To Hetalia and POTO aficionados alike, I wager you all can deduce who is being cast here...

I may have no idea what Hetalia is and no intention of ever changing that fact, but I do adore this! Normally gender-bending doesnt sit well with me, but when i have to choose between that and slash, well, gender-bending wins.
I love the time period (coughSissicough) you've set this in and their lovely expressions - the vivid colours in the background are especially breathtaking. I LOVE his outfit, BTW - judging by your description, he sounds more like a German stereotype than an Austrian one. I'd always assumed Austrian sterotypes to be, well, like the people in Sissi were: definitely traditionalist, but a lot more cheerful and festive than their German counterparts. Do you think you could compare and contrast the two Hetalia characters for me?

To concisely summarize Hetalia, it is simply a serio-comedic satire of nations being personified as flawed and eccentric men and woman, each history being presented in a wacky manner through relationships and allusions, not to mention innocuous innuendos.
Actually, the couple of Austria and Hungary is not gender bent, Hungary is represented as a woman, but a warrior woman like Mulan, who is fiercely devoted to her husband Austria, and will fight to the death for him.
Austria, likewise, would sacrifice anything for Hungary, many times, he risks his own skin for her. He is every the inch the polished, modest gentleman, and dedicates everything he composes-he is a composer when he is not engaged in battles-to her.
In actuality, I know scarce little of Germanic stereotypes, I assumed Austrians were more elitist and highbrow than Germans, while Germans were dead serious and cannot laugh and military obsessed.
Austria, in the Hetalian personification, is a man who demands propriety in all matters, even washing dishes! And also is a dead-pan person who is obsessed with music and fine culture, as well as confectionery masterpieces, such as rich cakes which are 1000calories a slice! Music is a mainstay of his life, next to his relationship with Hungary.
Germany, however, is more quick to anger and drastic measures, more violent, though both are equally harsh, Germany is military obsessed, and disciplines himself even while he sleeps. Austria follows the taut structure of royal pomp and circumstance, while Germany is quick to the cut with military cadences and shotgunning orders, as well as fighting like a Germanic Rambo, while Austria goes through all the mannerisms of protocol of engaging an enemy.
I shall link more when able to locate them, but here are episodes with Austria featured in it.

By Jingo, you have guessed correctly, it is Austria(Roderich Edelstein) and Hungary (Elizaeteva Hedevary) as Erik and Christine!
Thank you! I struggled with the concept of Austria, the gentleman who demands a dignified abode with cultured refinery, living in a dank catacomb, he would have surely opted to adorn the place drastically to suit his preferences.

Is this idea based off your version of PotO? I remember it was something similar to that.
Yes, I think he would prefer the best...though if memory serves me correctly, Prussia said he's cheap with money. I guess that's only in financial terms, and Erik himself possibly wasn't, considering a 'well recived' 20,000 francs a month.
I think Erik and Austria would get along really well...too bad he's from France though.

Actually, this was for the art work, I have yet to see what Kalea will be constructing for the overall details of the fanfic.
If one recalls, Erik was a master of illusion, hence, instead of a dank dungeon-like, he could adorned, renovate and all to create the facade of a regal palatial setting where he hid all those years.
Perhaps Austria struggle with stinginess stems from the fact he lends Hungary money so frequently, he is often broke!(I read a comic of this somewhere on DA...)
Yes, if Austria ever discovered Erik was French, he would used the Punjab lasso on Erik instead!

Yes! How did you know, Auntie? I used wax pastels! They are incredible to work, the richness of color is simply a delight to work with!

If you are using oil pastels, it is possible to thin them with White spirit of turpentine to get an oil painted effect.

Thank you Auntie, though I fear computer paper would sustain oil, and I do not have it because it appears rather messy to work with. What type of paper could be used for oil pastels?

Louvan In reply to Tete-DePunk [2011-07-29 09:29:02 +0000 UTC]
You can buy pastel paper at an art shop or -probably cheaper-ordinary Cartridge paper which can be sized with PVA glue diluted with water, that makes a good base for oil paints. I used to do that when I was at art school and couldn't afford oil board or canvas.
