Description An M7-class solar flare from Sunspot 696 hurled a coronal mass ejection toward Earth that sparked extremely bright aurora borealis over much of North America during the early morning hours of November 8, 2004. This shot is actually facing east-southeast, rather than north.

Model: me.

Well we've been lucky here in North America as most of the recent major auroral storms have peaked when it was dark over our continent. Also, Earth's magnetic North Pole is located closer to North America than Europe, and so locations in North America have higher "geomagnetic latitudes" than places in Europe at the same physical latitudes, making it easier to see auroral displays. Unfortunately, we're right in the middle of solar minimum right now, so strong storms are few and far between, but if you regularly check [link] , you can find out when the best times to look are.

Thank you. It's the northern lights, but as bright and colorful as I've ever had the pleasure of seeing them.
