Description
Real quickly, I do not own the models here and this time, I'm unfortunately drawing a blank on who made what. I know most of them were imported to XNA by WOLFBLADE111 aside from 1 or 2. Look I'm sorry, this sounds lazy but rather than bother to look for the creators, I'm just gonna say I didn't make these and move on.Anyways. There's no real reason for this image aside from I wanted to pose some giant monsters and also it's due to a very, VERY big undertaking I'm about to embark on. So, by the end of this month, we will see the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the latest entry in the Godzilla and Kong franchises and yet another entry in the Monsterverse. At the beginning of May, we will see the first rollout of Minus One's home release with the Japanese Blu-Ray which means an American release won't be too far away and with news like this? I'm of course put into a very Kaiju mood which to be fair is not hard to put me into since let me tell you, I'm a Kaiju fanatic.
Years ago, I remember seeing on TV a channel airing a particular film. This film featured a gigantic dinosaur creature glowing bright orange tearing apart a city which I would later come to know as Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Now before that? I was aware of Godzilla at least when it came to the name. Later on I'd learn about the creature though admittedly my understanding was about what most Americans had which is that he's a big green lizard boi who breathes fire. It wasn't until a few years later I'd come to watch some of the Heisei series and a few films from Milennium. My first real exposure to the rest of this particular series came from one faithful day when I watched the second iteraltion of Monster Madness, a web series James Rolfe did where for all 31 days of October he'd look at a different horror film and in the case of the second? He decided to dedicate the entire month to Godzilla and it was from that point on I ended up hooked on giant monsters. Thankfully a family member was also a fan of this stuff so they had a good amount of DVDs which they were gracious enough to let me borrow and I watched as many as I could though mostly it was just Godzilla. As for my experience with the other monsters featured? I only knew Kong from the 2005 Peter Jackson movie, later King Kong vs. Godzilla and a direct-to-DVD animated film called Kong: King of Atlantis and Gamera I always knew but never watched.
Later on I would try to watch all the Godzilla films myself and watched the original Gojira, its American re-edit, the absolutely bizarre Cozzilla and Godzilla Raids Again before stopping since I lacked the motivation to keep going, likely because I chose to watch effectively three versions of the same film in a single day. Then basically as a celebration for Criterion putting out the entire Showa era of Godzilla on Blu-Ray with Arrow Video later doing the same for Gamera (Though better because they managed to put out ALL the movies.), I decided to go on a marathon of the Showa era of Godzilla with the added bonus of the 1933 King Kong and that's mostly because when it comes to big media marathons I've done? I always kind of worry about how much time it'd take. Well considering that by this point I've been reading through Dragon Ball for several weeks, watched that whole franchise before, watched through all of Avatar and other big series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars? I'm ready to carry out a truly monster-sized marathon. So for... god who knows how many months? I'm going to embark on a journey through several Kaiju films and I'm not just talking Godzilla. Through all the means I can possibly use, I mean the kind of marathon that frankly with a level of effort put into it that would cause jaws to properly snap off as this is covering an assload of ground. I'm talking Kong, Rodan, Mothra, Gamera, Pacific Rim, Raiga, Reigo, Pulgasari, Gorgo, Reptilicus and that's just a small portion of it. I'm thinking also with it I might do some reviews either here or on my Letterboxd so you can follow along with my journey and see my opinions and potentially dwindling sanity since this is going to be a massive undertaking and plus some of these films I know are gonna be a trip to watch.
As for the image itself? Basically just wanted to have Kaiju strike a dynamic pose. Kong I put in black and white because it represents the original film and honestly the Rise of Kong model in the right lighting looks great like that. Gamera is a little more saturated because I was primarily thinking of the posters for the Heisei films while Rodan is bright red for a look that's kind of supposed to pay tribute to Fire Rodan. Godzilla I had no specific idea for. Either way, hope you enjoy the image and I hope you stay tuned for the Kaiju runthrough or whatever I end up calling it.
