So in case it isn't clear by now? We've got an X-Men show coming! Finally we hear more about X-Men '97, the continuation of the old X-men cartoon and seemingly Marvel's attempt to really bring credibility to their animation since the past few years have ranged from lackluster to pretty bad and with this trailer? Holy crap it looks so good! It pulls on all the right nostalgic notes, the animation is beautiful in how it pays tribute to the old while being very modern, they've grabbed as many of the surviving cast as they could which means we get to hear Cal motherfucking Dodd as Wolverine again. We've gotten some cool action shots that demonstrate how we are not working off network schedules anymore. It looks so good! I'm so excited! I wonder what other people are saying...

I then immediately wished I didn't learn because of course, X-Men '97 was announced for 2024, it's a Marvel show which means Disney to a degree is behind it and that means we have once again another instance of a show being dragged into the ever-growing, ever-increasing in stupidity mess that is the "culture war" which I put in quotes because to be frank? This is not a war and the prize for "winning" (if there really is any) is mostly just proving that some people should really not be in this fandom and this really stands out. So, one of the aspects of this silly, SILLY nontroversy is that people were quite angry about a certain Southern belle and her... supposed lack of cake in a shot. They cried out from the rafters, "DISNEY ONCE AGAIN APPEASING FEMINISTS!", "X-MEN'S GONE WOKE!" which usually comes with the sharing of at this point a rather famous screencap of Rogue looking up at Apocalypse from the OG series where the camera makes her look like she's posing like she's a supermodel with an ass to match. This of course was noticed because I'd say of all the X-Men from the old cartoon? People really gained quite the attraction to Rogue. Helps that one of the most notable internet videos featuring her was Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 Hottest Animated Women where she was number 3 and how that exposed her to a whole bunch of people who likely never even saw the original show.

Now, let me be totally clear about this. This is not a screed about what you're attracted to. A lot of us have attractions to certain characters and yes that includes progressives. A lot of us in fact even do enjoy our fair share of adult material and when it comes to those of us who aren't straight? I mean come on, if you can admire a nice round ass, we're free to admire some alabaster abs and yes, we can be bitten by the horn and for the record, most complaints about fanservice and what have you are much more nuanced than just "We don't like the titties and ass.". In fact, we can absolutely appreciate the tits and ass but that's a topic for a completely different time. Anyways, what this actually is about is pointing out a very crucial detail that seems to be getting overlooked... aside from the obvious one that the shot that people are using of Rogue to complain is a wide shot that has to be zoomed in on considerably which is the kind of thing you see mostly in anime discussions. Here's the thing people, this is a normal tenet of animation. Characters in farther shots are gonna be drawn with less detail. Not only that but this is also the work of Studio Mir who naturally with their style tend to go for looser character designs for the sole purpose of keeping the animation fluid and action-packed. If you don't like the aesthetic? I can't help you there because that's personal preference but that's all it is.

But the real point to make is that in most of the series? Rogue's ass does not look like that one screencap at all. Hell, if one looks at the shots of Rogue and compares them to how she appeared in most of the original series? They match up. Rogue has just never been constantly drawn with a supermodel ass aside from that one shot but she's still keeping her curvy physique. Now to be fair, there were some shots in the original X-Men that definitely were there to more show off Rogue's assets, in particular the shots of her unconscious where she has her waist turned which without context looks like she's posing for a magazine spread that emphasize her curves but that's normal for many fanservice shots in any show. Sometimes certain poses and how a character is drawn emphasizes those elements but they don't really change the overall design. To use another character as an example, this is how Superman can look about as buff as a regular bodybuilder but then have it taken to the extreme when he needs to look powerful, art is a funny thing like that. This is not a case of "wokeness" invading your show, it's you misremembering the series or at the very least thinking a bit too much with your dick to focus on this one inconsequential detail, especially when considering from what the trailer showed? Rogue's still as beautiful as she always was and if you're really about the fanservice? Storm still has her breasts like Rogue does and a shot at the end features the characters in what looks like workout gear including Storm in a pink crop top. I think it's clear that there is no problem with making a character sexy. But really why is this the focus? I would personally be wondering is what we're gonna see from Rogue in this series, how they're gonna build upon the last time we saw her or even with the fact this is a streaming show in the 2020s that doesn't have the same network oversight and rules how they're maybe gonna bring in stuff from the comics that Fox censors couldn't necessarily allow or better yet, focusing on all the cool shit the trailer showed, not on one character's ass, especially since the internet has no shortage of attractive Rogue art if that's what you're into and it's here I'm gonna get more blunt.

To go back to my previous point, like I said before, we progressives are able to enjoy fanservice and partake in some cake. The thing is we're not consumed by horniness. Fanservice and the horn have a time and place, porn has a place. What matters ultimately is how you engage with it and the understanding that isn't all something has to be. Being disappointed a character doesn't have an ass? Okay that's strange but if it's just disappointment that you can shrug off and move on from, that's normal. To treat the loss of a character's ass like it's this crucial part of them and that it's a company trying to stick in their agenda? My dude, you have either been brainpoisoned by too many outrage merchants and/or you have a deeply unhealthy relationship with sexual content that you really should look at because this is not a big deal. Rogue having a dump truck was not a major part of her character, this isn't even a case like Powergirl where there are reasons given for the hole in the costume, it just was how she was drawn and like any comic character? The way in which she can be portrayed is flexible. Plus there's ultimately the reality that a lot of the design trends we saw back then were in part because of people settling into a pattern that we are now breaking from because media can and should evolve with the times. If it didn't? Trust me, some of the content you love would go to shit or just would not exist and in the case of this? It's especially important because if X-Men was just more of the original cartoon? There is no reason for this revival beyond nostalgia. There has to be something more to it than that.

Finally, I feel like highlighting a particular detail about the X-Men that needs to be stated every time.

The X-Men have ALWAYS been woke. The Mutants are stand-ins for the prejudiced and downtrodden, Stan Lee had consistently made that clear and if your response is "Well it was subtle back then.", no it wasn't, it's just that when you were younger, you paid attention more to the cool action and colorful characters and the surface story. Stuff like allegory and so on got lost simply because that wasn't what you were focusing on. To use an example, I watched the entirety of the DCAU and Avatar: The Last Airbender and both shows really get into the weeds with certain topics whether it's the DCAU covering the subject of sexism where it points out that there are legitimate problems that can certainly piss people off for legit reasons but that there are good points and that it's up to men to be better or Avatar covering topics like abuse and trauma in manners a kid can understand and X-Men was no different. While my experience with the cartoon is limited? What I did watch and the clips I've seen really show me why people liked it because it wasn't just cool action, it was the X-Men comics brought to life which comes complete with their commentary. To expect that a revival series will just forgo this is to completely misrepresent the show and also demonstrates that if I'm being honest? You don't care about the show, you care about the nostalgia surrounding it.
