It was me Barry... I ruined your franchise...I have nothing for this I'm sorry. So I finally had the time to sit down and watch what is supposedly the end of the DCEU, a film series that much like some personal stuff I'm going through leaves me feeling so very conflicted and above all else just disappointed.
Now to preface this, I just want to kind of lay my cards out bare here, I was never was one of those guys that just shat on the DCEU at every moment I had. If anything when this universe first started with Man of Steel? I was actually quite excited to see where this universe was gonna go after that film which despite its many issues and the fact I've ultimately grown colder on it as time has gone on I still ultimately say I like. I took the stance that so long as the next film could take the criticism of the last one into consideration? We'd be in good hands for a very solid film universe to properly rival the MCU while giving wholly unique experiences...
Then Batman v. Superman saunters in and promptly punches those hopes square in the goddamn gooch which regardless of what cut you watch will deliver a horrible time whether it's the mind-numbingly baffling choices of the theatrical which make the film just so much more of a pain to follow on top of being a pretentious as all hell joyless slog or the unholy runtime of the Ultimate Edition which despite being more coherent is still a pretentious as all hell joyless slog and now there's way more of it and from that point on? This project has been a confused mess from top-to-bottom. Out of the 13 films in this series, I feel it's only 5 films that really count to me as being actually well crafted films with the rest either being bad, enjoyable to me for the wrong reasons or just kinda mid and considering that they also have... the unbelievably icky barrier of entry that is realizing talking about these films in any capacity is likely to leave you with having to face off with the Snyder cult? Honestly I've been checked out of this universe since the theatrical cut of JL and so I haven't really seen any entry beyond that film in theaters. I've largely in fact stayed away from these films and caught them on home media or on streaming and in the case of the Flash? I'd be lying if I said I didn't consider just skipping this film altogether since in recent years? I've felt no desire to support WB Discovery whether it's them basically dismantling their large catalog of classics for tax write-offs or David Zaslav being just one of the worst and the ongoing saga that was Ezra Miller just thoroughly losing their shit to the point where they basically became Hawaii's arch-nemesis while WB was so desperate for a win they just turned a blind eye to that and instead chose to hype up the Flash as being the thing that was gonna save this rapidly sinking ship which is why I in a way was overloaded with relief to see the film BOMB at the box office.
That being said? I am a much larger DC fan than I am Marvel and morbid curiosity is something that tends to take over when it comes to infamous films. Plus at this point I've seen every DCEU film and the TV series Peacemaker so I felt I had to see how it ended. So eventually I sat down with a cold alchoholic beverage in my hand and took a dive into this one knowing full well I was in for a mess and that at best, I'd get some fun out of seeing Michael Keaton kicking ass as Batman again. When I left that couch after finishing the film? I couldn't help but think that this is by far the most perfect ending a film series like this could get, a 2 and a half hour long clusterfuck with some of the worst CG that has ever been put into a film, a clumsy as all hell story that feels like it isn't so much a film as it is just a hodgepodge of scenes shot for trailers that no one knew what to do with and above all else, a vision that feels so at odds with itself at every turn on what it wants to be and at points feels like it desires nothing more than death for this series more than even some of its detractors do. I mean when you spend a good chunk of the film just showing off tasteless plasticy CG replicas of deceased stars basically just to shout "REMEMBER WHEN THESE THINGS WERE GOOD?!" and have a clearly just checked the fuck out Michael Keaton just there to say the thing from the thing people liked? That says just so much. For real, this is not a review of The Flash so much as it's just me burying it and the DCEU because honestly? What's there to say at this point that other reviewers haven't already said. This thing is a garbage-fire. Is it the worst DCEU film ever? Its title is not Batman v. Superman nor is it 2017's Suicide Squad so no. Is it the worst superhero film ever? Well let's just say it at least ain't Morbius but it is so frustrating and honestly one of the saddest displays from artists and such a well-renowned studio who all should know better. Honestly, this film makes me want to apologize to the films this year I was so hard on like ROTB and TMNT: MM because at the very least while they had their issues? At least they were mostly competently put-together movies whereas Flash can't even bother to be that. The only reason I chose not to put the arbitrary ranking at a 1 is because it has like three good scenes that got a chuckle out of me and one involves Aquaman passing out drunk in a puddle which I like almost as a visual representation for the DCEU as a whole and what this ending is. It's not a proud triumphant climax where it manages to make you feel sad this project's finishing up. It's a drunken fool passing out leaving you to finally go "Oh thank fuck it's over." because now you don't have to worry about it doing anymore stupid shit.
