Description

Oddly enough, a very fitting thing to do considering just recently, they've announced that various Nickelodeon character skins are coming to the third person MOBA Smite which is basically about gods from various pantheons engaging in a big ol' battle and one of those characters just so happens to be my favorite robot girl who has the strength of a million and seventy men. It's also oddly fitting since also present in this game is Sun Wukong from the tale of Journey to the West who in this game due to it being recorded at Chris Sabat's Okra-Tron 5000 studio is voiced by Sean Schemmel AKA Goku himself. And when considering other crossovers, technically speaking this is a game where Jenny Wakeman can battle against the forces of Slipknot, Goku, Team RWBY and the friggin' Transformers which... god if you said something like this would happen several years back I would either faint or call you a filthy liar. But anyways, some of my more longtime watchers might recognize this since a good while back, I drew a piece depicting Jenny from MLAATR as a Super Saiyan God or in this case a Super Robot God. It was a hand-drawn piece that I took a picture of and traced over digitally using a mouse and keyboard and a whole lot of patience. This one is a bit different though because rather than be completely done in that manner? This is more of an edit like I tend to do usually and in this case was an edit off of a... shot from the infamous Newgrounds flash which yes is disturbing but considering it is the only thing that has Jenny in crystal clear HD in 2D animation and some shots and angles which she is never really shown from in the show? It's been pretty damn invaluable material even in drawing practice or at least the most SFW stuff is. With that in mind, I cannot take complete credit for this since this is an edit but still a particularly fun one to do. Now for the sake of the newcomers, let's talk design here and in particular, how translating Super Saiyan God to another show's style and character is... not the easiest task.

To start off, Super Saiyan God isn't as simple as taking a Saiyan's base form, recoloring the hair and eyes red and then being finished, it's something a little more involved since there are a lot of subtle changes in the build, everything has a much softer, rounder quality than the usual Super Saiyan forms, the hair itself is not just a straight crimson and is a specific kind of pinkish red. A lot of its change are about simplicity and elegance over crazy overhauls and... well for a design like Jenny's that's where you run into a huge hurdle. Design-wise? Jenny is already crazy simple for she only really has two main colors, white and light blue. She also in later seasons is known for having colored outlines and on top of that due to how she's drawn? It is easy to screw up proportions so wildly that she doesn't look like herself. Another big issue you'll also run into involves the color design. Super Saiyan and many other forms in Dragon Ball only change the hair and aside from differences in the musculature, it generally leaves the body alone and relies on things like a characters outfit for the color combination, something that Jenny, again, can't really do due to her being so simple. Want an example of this? Look up Zone's picture of Jenny going Super Saiyan and you'll see what I mean. That drawing itself looks solid but the introduction of the gold to Jenny's color combination throws off the look. Though I thought of how I could've done that and I went through with the original piece many design iterations. Some used saturated blues, others used one tone of red but some of the results ended up making her look either silly or like I just did her hot rod variant with no flames. So after awhile I settled on this look where the red for the eyes would be used for the chest, skirt and legs while the pinkish red would be used for the hair and belly bolt. This way I'd at least feel the colors were evenly distributed and also in a way it's kind of similar to how classic Mega Man looks when he uses his power-ups. I know there are probably other ways I could've done this but for me personally? This color combination turned out the most appealing and allowed for Jenny to look more unique while still evoking the SSG aesthetic.

Speaking of that aesthetic, there's also the manner of the eyes. One of the key details of Super Saiyan God is the eye-shapes. They're not as angular, slightly smaller and there's the huge red iris that has this deep red. And once again, Jenny... doesn't really have these things. Her face is already so simple and normally she doesn't have an iris whatsoever aside from one episode where she gets replacement eyes. After a lot of deliberation? I chose to go for eyes that are kind of a cross between Goku's SSG eyes and Jenny's regular eyes. The one final piece that I needed to achieve the look I wanted was then to add the highlight across Jenny's pupils which is pretty small and kind of tricky to see I realize but I really feel like if you don't have this? Something would be missing. Same goes for the hair which is slightly different from how it normally is because... well that's how Goku's hair is. A detail that's easy to miss is that SSG Goku's hair is ever so slightly different. His bangs are raised ever so slightly and also he loses all of the tiny loose strands. Jenny's "hair" I felt needed to at least have some sort of different look at least to me and the last time I did this, I based the bangs heavily on being a combination of Goku's and her own but honestly the more I look back at it? The more disappointed I am with the hair so I went for something that's a bit more subtle.

Speaking of changes, there are also two things that I did differently from the last time I did this. The first is that for the pupils themselves, I used the same red I outlined most of the body in to maintain some more simplicity and visual consistency and next is I chose to try my hand at shading this gal. Now to achieve the look, I referenced primarily both how Dragon Ball Super tended to be shaded when it was airing on TV and also the MLAATR episode "Victim of Fashion" where Jenny is shown with a ton of additional highlights after a wax job. This was a tricky thing to try and accomplish. Jenny after all has a design that is built off simplicity therefore adding shading and the highlights was incredibly risky. So with that in mind, I kept the shading down to only one dark layer and one highlight layer and tried to hit a middle ground between being reminiscent of how Super would be shaded and again that episode and overall I think it turned out okay. With that? All that was needed was for me to throw together a very quick background just so the void of emptiness won't be all that anyone's staring at and voila, this is what I came up with.

Now before you say anything, let me say that yes, I know this doesn't begin to make sense at all, I'm just doing this for fun and that's all I need to say about that. Anyways, I hope you all like it because honestly, I spent way too long working on this and am in desperate need of a nap.
