Description Gosh this was tough! My first time not skeleton-tracing my image and just looking at a reference... Liquify tool was reeeeally my friend here to make things look less odd. Bennett turned the car and float into KhanCoban’s gates. A blissfully short trip to the sale, just across the state, they had no need for the living quarters of the truck and could take a float. They, being Bennett, Aveline and Tyler. KhanCoban bred Australian Warmbloods, and Bennett was enthusiastic to buy a horse with high-level potential and from a breed founded in the very country. Aveline threw herself out of the ute before they’d even come to a halt. She mused at the size of the place, as they drove past cows and broodmares and yearlings in huge paddocks.

“We should get cows!”
“It’s not the worst idea you’ve had, but it’s not up to me. Besides, we’re here for horses.”
“Right.” Without another word, Aveline disappeared into the nearby barn. Bennett shot Tyler a look, and he shrugged.
“I still think we should’ve bought the toddler leash.” He quipped. Bennett shook his head, looking at the ground as the pair entered the right wing of the barn. A few curious faces peered over stall doors, with import numbers hanging on their doors. The six horses were varied in colour and build. As usual, he was immediately drawn to the two bay faces. The first, a mare by the name of Jack, was cribbing on the stall door. Reading her biography, it sounded a lot like she needed full-time turnout. She was older, but, if her information was to believed, she would be ideal for Sam to start competing on. She was also a striking looking mare, with a skunk tail and white spattered on her side. She had a kind face, and was friendly enough, allowing her face to be pat without cribbing. He mentally took note of her. The other bay was a stallion, Fade. Just by reading his biography, Bennett knew he wouldn’t be suitable. As attractive as he was, the stallion was too unpredictable and would required intensive rehabilitation. He felt pity for the stallion, as he stood far back in his stall and watched him carefully. If it had been several years in the past, he would have. But it was not meant to be. On either side of Fade was a gelding and a stallion. The gelding was pretty, but with intentions to breed, again unsuitable. The palomino stallion was bright and bold, in what seemed to match his personality upon reading. Bennett harboured the old belief that palomino horses were arrogant and “Barbie” horses. However, the quality of the stallion was undeniable. Regardless of colour, he was another with potential. The last two horses were mares, a huge, heavily dappled mare with enormous presence, and a much more refined black mare. Upon looking into the stall of the black mare, he was surprised to see a huge somatic mutation across her body. It made her incredibly striking, and the mare greeted him with a gentle snort. He rubbed her forehead, and she leaned in, grateful for the attention. He knew that she would be Aveline’s favourite. Her information said she bucked and reared, which could be worked through. Her attitude however made him a bit leery, especially alongside her age and apparently basic ridden work. Still, he was undeniably interested. The last mare was one he was most drawn to. A big, grey mare. She greeted him with a big, blazed head. He would be most interested to see her move, the way she was being described. At five years old, it was likely her attitude could be worked with, Bennett however suspected that there may be hormonal issues causing her stallion-like behaviour and build. He was used to working with stallions, and even preferred it. The stallions kept him sharp, and they gave a high level of dedication. He at least had to see her move.

After a few minutes of wandering, Bennett managed to round up his two misfit riders and Ryan Jacobs, KhanCoban’s young horse trainer. After a brief questioning, he decided to test ride Vega, the big grey. Aveline was far too small to take on a 17hh hot mare built like a brick shit house, and Tyler’s dressage was rather lacking. Bennett was going to ride her himself, and see what moves he could possibly coax from her. Adorned in black dressage gear and exercise boots, the group walked her outside to one of the open outdoor arenas. After a leg-up from Ryan, he settled in the saddle of the tall mare. She stood, filled with energy, trying desperately not to walk off without being told. Her manners were good, and Bennett could tell she had a good foundation. Opening his hips and relaxing, the mare picked up a strong walk. Walk was a hard pace to get right, and the mare was showing a very high quality walk. She swung easily and expressively, with an elastic pace. She seemed well schooled, even if she was just bluffing. A few circles of walk, and Bennett allowed her to move into a trot. It really did feel like allowing her, she was ready to go at the drop of a hat, just waiting for permission. Her trot was unbelievable. She oozed talent, knees snapping easily and her back lifting as she overreached her own tracks. By that time, Bennett knew she was the one to try for. He schooled her briefly, as she sucked up her head and overbent, tucking her nose in. Lifting his hands, he squeezed gently with his legs and the mare swung forward, head dipping back up into frame. He dropped his inside rein to scratch her neck, and she used the opportunity to break into a canter. She did not snatch the reins at all, but it appeared she was reliant on rein pressure to keep pace. That would have to be worked on, she would need to be able to keep a rhythm on a loose rein without rushing. Her brakes worked well enough, as she came back into the trot without much argument. His next task was to see how her laterals worked, if at all. She was sensitive enough to pressure he felt he could try asking for a yield. Sure enough, at a walk, she crossed over easily. She had great muscling, and didn’t seem to find the task difficult in either direction. Bennett asked for a trot, and guided her away from the fence. Cutting down the line, he applied his inside leg. As before, she floated easily to the side, crossing her legs easily. He looked at Aveline and Tyler, and simply nodded. She could be a star. (1101 words)
