Description Note: this is a HUGE picture. Download to see it full size.

The first of my promised tutorials: preparing the bait. This is how I take a store bought pony and turn it into a blank canvas, ready for sculpting, painting, or whatever else I plan to do with it. Other tutorials will be posted when I have time, but finishing ponies for the show takes precedent. If you want a tutorial on a specific aspect of customizing, please ask! I'll be hitting the major points (Bait prep, full body repaint, symbol painting, eye painting, rehairing), but anything else will only be posted if requested. Enjoy!

If I come upon a cheap one I promise to hack it apart just to see how it's put together.

Thanks very much for doing this. I'm a little nervous as I'm not very good at crafts, but I'll give this a go.

Hmmm..
So I'm customizing my first pony sometime within the next couple months, and I was just curious, what would happen if you used nail polish remover instead of acetone- juuuust wondering. haha. have you ever tried it?

I'm going to be using your tutorials for the entire pony, so I'm looking forward to it. They're all really well explained. c:

Acetone IS nail polish remover - the pure stuff is what the professional's use. You want to use pure acetone since the other nail polish removers you can buy in a store have less acetone and more water, so they're weaker and don't work well at all. If you don't use pure acetone the symbol will smear and stain the pony instead of coming off. Acetone isn't dangerous and is sold at the same stores you would nail polish remover. Just read your labels before you buy and you should be able to track it down without a problem.

Good luck! Feel free to note me with any other questions.

I find that putting the ponies in a tub of boiling water before i start helps loosen the glue on the neck making it easier to remove without cutting. After the mane has been cut off dipping the head in the boiling water also helps make pulling the last bits of hair out easier

The-Lancastrian In reply to Security16 [2008-12-27 13:29:14 +0000 UTC]

Really? I've occasionally had that help with the hair before but never the neck. Perhaps I'm not leaving the pony in ling enough? How long do you dunk it for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Security16 In reply to The-Lancastrian [2008-12-27 17:26:17 +0000 UTC]

I usually leave it in the water until i can move the head around a bit. When the head starts moving that is usually when you can take thier heads off with no danger of cutting it up

What's the average price for pure acetone?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Lancastrian In reply to Chesarei [2008-08-30 21:56:11 +0000 UTC]

It depends on how big the bottle is and if it's name or store brand. Buy it at a drug store (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc) and not a beauty supply store for the cheapest prices. You'll have to comparison shop in your area to determine average price.

Rather a good idea. <3 How fast does it work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Lancastrian In reply to LadyVincira [2008-08-11 22:56:19 +0000 UTC]

Depends on the amount of glue in the head. The new ones with the movable heads take a minute, tops. A ton of glue can take some time and wrist injury.

Awesome! I've been keeping an eye out for MLPs at yardsales, because I want to make some of my characters. This is great.

Ooh, good luck! I love making OC ponies. If you want multiple ponies for cheap, check Ebay. You can usually get decently priced lots there.

I'll have a look then.

Are you going to do a second part showing how to do the other custom stuff, like putting a custom tail and mane, or re-painting?
