Description
My wing tutorial that I 'donated' to the UK ponycon last year, to be in the Customizer's Bible.1- Materials: Wire, wire cutters, a pointy clay tool (or ice pick or large needle), pliers, wire mesh, scissors to cut it (not good scissors, or you'll dull them), apoxie sculpt or similar clay, and an exacto knife and / or butter knife to add detail.
2 - Using your sharp implement, poke two holes on the pony's shoulder, where you want the wing to attach. They should be fairly close together, but far enough apart to help stabilize the wing.
3 - Cut a piece of wire twice as long as you want your wing, and then loop it over. Make it good and long, you can always cut it shorter.
4 - Insert the two ends into the two holes on the pony. I use pliers to help me do this.
5 - Twist the two ends of the wire together, so they can't pull back out.
6 - Twist the loop of wire together into a single strand, and shape it as the top edge of your wing.
7 - Cut out the shape of your wing in wire mesh. Sometimes I use two pieces, sometimes just one complete piece.
8 - Crimp the top of your wire mesh around the wire backbone of your wing. (use pliers, unless you have a very soft mesh that you can crimp by hand)
9 - This step is optional, but I sometimes cut the feather tips into the edge of the mesh.
10 - Apply a backbone of clay from the shoulder to the arch of the wing. Let this harden fully before continuing to work, so that it can support the rest of the wing.
Apply feathers in whatever style you wish! It's best to work in sections, and allow each to harden as you go. When applying detail with your knife, it's best to wet it often, so that the apoxie doesn't stick to it.

Just curious, do you recommend this method for ALL wing sizes? I'm going to make a set of small wings, like the G4 ones, and want to customize it a bit. Will I need the wire and wire mesh?

This tutorial is extremely helpful. I have a few flutter ponies from my childhood that I would like to try and put some wings on. They all broke off, as usually happens with the flutter ponies.
I have a question about the clay. Does it harden and stick right onto the pony's body or do you need some kind of glue to help it stick?

Sorry for the late reply. The clay itself is fairly adhesive, if I'm sculpting something very small it will stay stuck by itself unless pried or popped off with some force. If I'm making something bigger, like a wing, the wire anchored into the pony's body is what holds the extra weight on.

I think you can get them most places to sell toys. They're just regular My Little Ponies, usually for sale near the Bratz. Or you can usually get lots of used ones on Ebay.

The base pony, like the blue one in my tutorial? I buy that, and behead it and pull out all the hair. Then I rebuild it from scratch.

No, they're not at craft stores, they're anywhere that sells toys. They're official My Little Ponies.

Kewl! This is really helpful. Question-does the apoxie sculpt attach itself to the body of the pony when you sculpt the wings so that once dry, the wings stay in place ok? Like if you pick the pony up will the wings wobble or anything? I don't know if you're familiar with the model/resin horse hobby or not but I've apoxie sculpt on those horses and ever had a problem, but I've never used it on the MLP type of plastic, so was just wondering how it holds up that type of material.

It holds pretty well. It will form a bond with the mlp body, but if you drop it while working (which I do a little too often!) it sometimes pops off. But then, the wire holds it in place, and I just use a drop of super glue to reinforce it if that happens.
