Description Here it is, my Wire Pony Tutorial. This is the first tutorial I have made... ever. Please let me know of any mistakes or anything that will help me improve.

I know it does not cover stuff like wings. I will create more detailed tutorials for specific parts later on.

Hope everyone likes it.

Sorry for the delayed response,  you just need to match the type of solder to the metal being used.  A soldering pen might be usable, copper conducts heat very well which makes it difficult to heat the metal to the proper temperature for the solder when using a smaller soldering pen/iron.  While a smaller one might work, I used a larger one because it was a lot faster and gave a better finish.

Very nice! I fully intend to try this out. I have a couple questions though.

First, I have some 16g copper jewelry wire. Would that work for a project like this?

And could this be done with a cold solder? Or even no solder at all?

Finally, how fragile would the finished project be? Does it bend super easily?

Thanks

I have never used jewelry wire but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Lots of people make wire sculptures by simply twisting the wires but it is a lot more intricate.  I have never used cold solder so I couldn't tell you on that one.

They are actually quite sturdy.  The bigger they are the more fragile they become though.  Some parts like wings and tail bend more easily because there is not as much bracing.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I really want to try this out one time, so I'll send you a link of sorts when I actually found the time to do so.
Thanks for the tutorial, and I only have one more question for you; what wattage is your soldering iron?

eightup747 In reply to Cristal-Soul [2012-11-11 03:00:33 +0000 UTC]

Which pony are you making? I would straighten the horn up and bring the nose in, to make the head a bit more round.

How much did all of the tools to make this cost? and how long does it take you to make one pony on average?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eightup747 In reply to Cristal-Soul [2012-11-07 18:58:46 +0000 UTC]

For a basic set of tools you will need Needle Nose Pliers (if they have a wire cutter built in then thats a plus), some way to strip the wire, soldering iron, and clamps. You could probably buy everything for under $50.

Time is difficult to say. Roughly I would say around 20 hours per pony, not including time for painting.

Thanks, and when you means something to strip the wire. what do you mean by that?

eightup747 In reply to Cristal-Soul [2012-11-08 02:42:17 +0000 UTC]

If you buy a roll of 14/2 house wire at your local home improvement store. Then you need to cut the wires from the first piece of insulation. This can easily be done with a knife or razor blade. Inside there will be three wires, one will be bare and ready to use right away. The other two will have insulation around them, you will need a pair of wire strippers or something else to remove the insulation around the wire.

I have a few questions. How thick are these wires? Are they thinner, or thicker than a pinky finger? '.' And is this wiring expensive? And about how much does it cost? aaaand, does it melt in lower temperatures? (any lower then about 275 degrees?) Im thinking maybe I could use this stuff for large scale clay figures

Thank you for your time ^^

And I really like your work! It looks really good! c:

eightup747 In reply to CatCowProduce [2012-08-29 20:44:41 +0000 UTC]

The wires are about 1.5~2mm in diameter.

100feet of 14/2 (which has three strands = 300ft of usable wire) costs about $30ish

The melting point of copper is 1984 degrees Fahrenheit.
The melting point of the solder I use is about 370 degrees Fahrenheit.

Something I might add to the tip about cooling is that the reason you wait for the wire to completely cool is that warm or hot wire conducts heat better at an exponential rate than cold wire.

Thanks for this tutorial!
