I've been meaning to do one of these for a while and finally remembered to take the photographs when I was doing my latest custom, Candy Girl
I really hope it makes some sort of sense! Feedback would be very much appreciated as it's the first time I've ever written a tutorial

I don't think tinfoil would be strong enough, to be honest, but give it a go if you want!

Just a question, cause you showed pictures with the non rehaired head on the body...how do you work after you have sculpt the wings? Iam new in this, never have sculpted any wings...
So, isnΒ΄t it easer to rehair first and then sculpt the wings? Just a question, this tutorial is great and i will totally use it in the near future

I normally strip the pony (hair off, marks off etc) and go from there. I put the head back on when I'm sculpting so the wings don't accidentally poke the pony in the eye or something

Just wanted to chime in, I haven't made wings yet but I have baked before. If you plan on using the clay that needs to be baked, do not rehair until you're done with the sculpting then baking, because it's always best to bake with the pony's head on, so it doesn't warp or anything.
Otherwise, the air dry clay is perfect and you can just leave the head off while sculpting the wings. When you're done, rehair and pop the head back on!

This is so helpful! I've been trying to find a way to add wings to my Autumn Skye and I never knew how. One question, the clay I use won't dry by itself, you have to bake it so in those steps where it said to let dry, should I bake it? Or should I get better clay/apoxie/stuff?

I've never used it, but I know that you can use sculpy and then bake the pony as long as you take the magnet out of her hoof first

Thanks for posting this, I have been considering trying to do what I have seen done with the ponies and it looks like your tutorial could be really helpful..Do you have any other tutorials on how to make stuff out of apoxie or do you know of any links that could show you how to make other stuff (outfits,different designs)out of apoxie and mold it to the ponies? Any info you could give would be greatly appreciated..Thanks again for posting the tutorial!

This is really helpful! Sadly I bought a G4 that didn't have wings, so I have to make them now. Although It might be fun, making wings that "stand out". Just out of curiosity, would sculpey be a bad idea for this? Since it needs to be baked to harden, I'm concerned about the wire on the inside heating up and causing some sort of internal damage.
It's okay if you don't know. I haven't bought the clay yet, and if you have any suggestions for a clay to use, I'd be glad to listen.

I use apoxie sculpt (can be found on ebay) which works really well as it's a two-part mix that hardens due to a chemical reaction rather than being baked.
I know other customisers do use sculpy for some modifications as the ponies can withstand the temperatures needed (if you're using a G3, make sure you take the magnet out of the hoof first!) but I don't know how that works with the wire.
I'd generally recommend apoxie sculpt - I've never had it break after drying and I personally find it easier to work with than sculpy! Just be careful to only mix as much as you need to use within an hour. It starts going hard after that and it's pretty easy to mix too much.

Hmmm, okay. I'll probably order a small amount soon. I've never used clay before so I figured getting Sculpey would be better since it needs to be baked to dry. But I'll try out apoxie, and see how that goes. :3

It's actually really similar, in terms of texture anyway, to Sculpey

Though I wanted to ask. Do you recommend using an older generation MLP to the blanks you can get from Hasbro now for the larger wings? Or does it not matter as long as you're careful with your weight distribution?

Thank you very much for this tutorial. I have been searching for one for days. I have a random newbie questionl.... I am assuming it is alright to put the base in the oven with the sculpey to bake?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. I use air-dry sculpting material so I don't have any experience with that. I have read elsewhere that you can, as long as the oven isn't hot enough to melt the plastic. You'd also need to take out the hoof magnet as that can cause problems with the plastic as well!

I've been hunting all over for tuts on sculpting wings and yours has been the best I've found. I do have a question though and it's about the underside of the wings. You say to work on both sides at once so the feathers line up, but how did you do that on this pony where one wing is turned down like that against the body? How do we fix that part if we have wings too close to the bodies of our sculpture?

If I couldn't, I'd have sculpted the part that attached to the body, then loosened the wire attaching the wing to give me a bit more room to manouver. After it was finished I'd re-do the wire attachment and maybe glued the wing on for extra security!
