Description
Stinger, Amphibia, Paige, Azanni the Sorceress, Ardent, Sonik, SugarpopStinger:
The Shroud was dead. In the years to follow it would be realised that his symptoms lined up with the growing AIDS pandemic and that, passing away in 1971, he was one of the first cases of the disease in America. This wasn't known at the time. What was known was that The Shroud was dead. Grieving, Sarah Winters, one-time Kid Shroud, left Cedar to go to college in Washington and the Kid Crusaders fell apart. It was then that Robbie West, following hotly on the heels of a tempestuous falling out with the Spider, no longer believing in the infallibility of his mentor, cut out on his own under a brand new identity. Now going by Stinger, armed with a set of wrist mounted devices capable of firing electrically charged darts, West reformed the Crusaders and began recruiting old and new members alike.
Amphibia:
Coming into her own as a young woman, Laurie Hart, has proved herself to be a powerhouse amongst the Crusaders. Inheriting her mentor’s totemic amulet, prior to his mysterious disappearance, Amphibia now has access to his aquatic animal mimicry powers. Taking on a co-leadership role with Stinger, the two slowly skirting the edges of a romantic relationship, she has become a clear, level-headed, determined, compassionate and dangerous asset to the crime-fighting group.
Paige:
Christopher ‘Kit’ Berkilak has grown from younger brother to sidekick to partner. One of the few Crusaders who never seemed to 'outgrow' his mentor, Kit continues to battle at his side, now more as an equal than a pupil, but is also happy to duel alongside his friends in the Crusaders.
Azanni the Sorceress:
There is a name feared by the dark forces of the Netherworld, the Sleeping Things and the Skitter Men alike. It sends shivers down the snaggled spines of Elder Gods and caused the Imp Kings to grind their teeth. Azanni. The stage magician-turned-occult sorcerer still holds sway; his legacy, one of trembling in the dark places. His neice then, has big boots to fill. Armed with his old medallion and a book of spells, Alexa Azanni is a junior sorceress of high calibre. But still, she is a novice without a guide and her battles are harder won. When the Waking Dreamers split the skin between the world of slumber and invaded the city, she received aid in the form of the Stinger, Amphibia and Paige, who were casually catching-up over coffee. Their superheroic intervention helped drive back the incursion and meant they had the first new member for a revitalised version of the Crusaders.
Ardent:
Kenneth Chang came to America from China to attend Brownly University in the green hilly outskirts of Cedar City, Fitting in was hard for Kenny. Things got even harder when his latent superhuman abilities kicked in. He was in the city, heading to the cinema when a fight broke out between the Crusaders and the briefly reunited Brutal Brigade. When debris fell from a building during the conflict, Kenny understandably feared for his life. He expected to die. What he didn’t expect, was to have the strength to hold up the falling chunk of wall over his head. Though Kenny quickly fled, his actions were spotted by Sugarpop. In the days to follow, she led the Crusaders to seek him out. Realising he was now alone in a world full of people unlike him, and struggling with his new-found power, Kenny sought out the Crusaders, hoping they may have answers. They met each other and he was brought under their wing. There, Kenny learnt he had the power to increase his strength every time he feels and holds onto strong emotions. At first, the strength was strongest when he experienced anger or fear. The longer he spent time with the Crusaders, and the more he became comfortable with his new life, he came to realise that hope, love and family were the real sources of strength.
Sonik:
Coming from the inner-city Projects on Cedar's East Side, Jackson Bartlett never had much to aspire to. Jackson lived happily enough with his grandma and older brother Micah. Everything changed when Micah was shot and killed by a crooked cop. Micah had tried to keep Jackson out of the gang life, but keeping his brother at arm's length only meant Jackson desired even more to be a part of that life, if only to get closer to his brother again. Micah got caught up in a cop's secret narcotics deal and when fellow officers were called to the scene, Micah ran. The cop shot the boy to get rid of witnesses, pegged the entire thing upon Micah and claimed the bust for himself. Jackson saw it all. And ran. As he fled, pursued by the armed officer, he ran into a truck carrying toxic waste. The truck swerved, skidded and tossed its cargo into the air. The toxic waste doused Jackson and he screamed in agony. He was in hospital for three weeks before he came to. His grandma hadn't left his bedside. It didn't take long for Jackson to realise something had changed. The toxic waste had done something to his body. He was acutely sensitive to all sounds. It was deafening at first. So deafening he wanted to scream. When he did, he blew out the windows of his hospital room. And for a moment there was silence. It seemed Jackson could now absorb any sounds that encountered his body and redistribute them as concussive sonic blasts. His old life in tatters, he decided to start a new one, this time helping people and keeping the streets safe. He joined the Crusaders as Cedar City's own first black superhero, Sonik.
Sugarpop:
Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Rawlins had nobody. She'd got too old for any of the visitors to the orphanage to want to adopt her and had never really made friends with the other kids. As such, Cindy had to make her own fun. Typically, that meant shoplifting at the mall. Then one day, she picked the pocket of the wrong man. A scientist prepared to hand over state secrets was meant to meet a foreign government's covert agent. In the scientist's pocket was a tiny device, designed for military application. When he tried to make the transfer, he found he had nothing in his pocket with which to make the exchange. On the other side of the mall, Cindy played with the device, trying to work out what it was. Maybe it was a flaw in the design. Maybe it was a miracle. At any rate, Cindy Rawlins was not killed in the ensuing explosion. But she was changed. Suddenly, she found herself capable of generating mutlicoloured miniature balls of energy. The balls erupted from her body and sailed toward opponents with explosive force. Cindy had found a new thrill and decided to put her life of petty crime behind her. At first she was only in in for the rush, but soon Cindy learnt that her abilities came with duties. Taking the name Sugarpop, this wild-child carefree spirit may be the most destructive force on the Crusaders. Her teammates are glad those powers ended up in the hands of a person who doesn't have a single malicious bone in their body.
