Description
Barricade, Magpie, Mercy, Gravel, Lynxx, Hellfire, SpiderIn the last decade of the twentieth century, war has changed. No longer dictated by governmental mandates and political allegiance, war is now the province of multinational business conglomerates. One conglomerate sits above all. The US government has set its sight on the world’s greatest manufacturer of genetically engineering weapons: Empire Industries. What does Empire Industries specialise in? Lab grown super soldiers. They needed a heavy hitting tactical force to oppose whatever Empire might produce next. Their first recruit? A recent inmate of Cedar City Correctional Facility. A man responsible for breaking the neck of a local arms dealer. The con in question? One Pete Harlan. Who better to head up their task force than a man with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin? And so he was offered early parole should he be an unflinching operative of the government. They gave him the new code name Barricade. Harlan hated being a tool of the state but what choice did he have. He did however have one condition. He wanted to bring somebody in. But Pfeiffer Sylva has retired. Only Pete Harlem knew the truth. The truth was ugly. The truth was rehab. Her past as a heroin addict had gone undisclosed. She’d got herself off it long ago and her new vigilante antics seemed to have replaced the addicted urges for a bigger kick. But it got too much. She caved again, while on active duty. Spiralling out of control, Pete gave her an ultimatum and forced her to get help. In the years following rehab she’s gone back to living with Maya, trying to be a good sister and auntie to Maisie. However, when a mugger attacked her one night, she responded by breaking all his limbs. Pfeiffer felt the rush again. Knowing now what her true calling was, when Harlem called her to tell about a new gig she jumped at the chance. She’s not the same woman as before, disease and circumstance have changed her and to reflect this she’s got a whole new look and codename to go with it. The world took everything from her, now she’s gleefully taking whatever shred of goodness catches her eye. Max Force sparkled in the darkness, promoting purpose and the rush that comes with action. Thus the newly minted Magpie was recruited and Max Force was born. The pair’s first mission was to infiltrate a suspected Empire lab. Therein they encountered five individuals, newly emerged from their incubation pods. During the ensuing battle, the team was able to break the newly made combatants' mental programming and five new members were brought into the team. While many of the weapons built by Empire Industries, were modified pre-existing superhumans, some were cut whole-cloth. Mercy was designed to be the perfect killing machine. Her body was built to peak physical fitness, her senses augmented and her condition perfect. A flawless marksman and innate master of every fighting style known to man, Mercy barely feels pain and, most of all, has no qualms about killing. Programmed to see the life as a curse, she truly believes death is always a mercy. She is the perfect and unshakable loyal assassin. Or at least, she was meant to be. Gravel was another of Empire's lab-built weapons. A walking, talking battery ram, he is without organs or a skeletal system. He has no weak points and can level a building in seconds. Despite this, he emerged from his tank with a surprising sense of humour. How they created him is a mystery. He became the resident prankster, and the heart and soul, of Max Force. Lynxx was different. He was a villain long before Empire. His was a classic case of wrong place, wrong time. It is unknown why Empire Industries operatives specifically sought to kill The Spider and harvest his DNA. When they did so, assassin for hire Lynx had also been commissioned to take the hero out. Empire made their shot and Spider fell. Not desiring any witnesses, Lynx was to be next. Instead, command order him to be sedated and brought back to base. There h he was later subjected to barbaric procedures that reduced him to little more than a feral beast. Now running purely on primal instinct, this snarling beast can more often be seen bearing his fangs, claws at the ready, crouched atop the shoulder of Gravel. Jack Doolan is a walking warning. A drinker and a loose cannon, Jack considered himself a ladies’ man. Always ready for a quick scrap and a quickie behind the bogs, the Scotsman was riding high. His golden rule was never sleeping with the same girl twice. This came to bite him on the arse when he unknowingly slept with a young witch. After ignoring her calls during the week following their little rendezvous, the young witch turned to her book of spells. She found out how to summon and bind a demonic force of vengeance. If the young man had an unquenchable flaming lust that could not be put out, well then, the fitting punishment would be for his body to burn in similar hellish fashion. When Empire Industries scoured the globe for test subjects, they found found him in a hospital unit, comatose due to the intense pain of unquenchable fire consuming his body. No longer needing food or even air to breathe, he simply blazed. Empire scientists were able to shut down the sensation receptors in his brain and restore him to a conscious state. Hellfire now wields the flames of Hades as an offensive force, also granting him flight. For all he’s been through, he hasn’t changed a bit. When Empire Industries acquired the genetic code of the hero Spider, they immediately set to work. They did not simply create a carbon copy however. Enhancing this clone with cybernetic implants and their standard augmented senses, they left him as a blank slate, programmable for each individual mission. When Max Force released this new Spider, he attacked out of automated self-defence protocols. However, they were able to redirect him so as to work for them. Now a member of the team, flickers of individuality have begun to surface. What this living weapon chooses to do with his emergent new identity though remains to be seen.
