Description I heard the Southwest Chief was going to have a few tag-alongs this past Thursday, so I made a trip out to shoot the train as it came through my area. The sun had just sunken behind the mountains about 5 minutes before the train came by (which accounts for the soft light) and I was actually just about to leave when I heard its horns. Bringing up the front of the train is 2 Amtrak Genesis units, nos. 155 & 194. Bringing up the rear of the train is BNSF "Big Dome" Glacier View, and California Zephyr (CB&Q) observation car Silver Solarium.

Thanks. The perspective is a combination of the smash from the telephoto I was using and the elevated vantage point next to the tracks.

Thanks so much! I'm fully aware of the benefits that the dome can offer for photography. I took this from an ex-Burlington dome on the Branson Railway in Missouri: [link]

Definitely a great catch! There are only two dome cars in all of Germany, and I've yet to see them come through here, as the "Rheingold" spends most of its time in northern Germany and rarely come to Heidelberg.

This car, along with a couple other Budd domes get out a number of times per year, as they belong to companies that offer special excursions on them. I've only been out to photograph them a couple times though because it is hard to take time off of work during the day, or they go through at night which makes them too hard to photograph.

very cool... Who owns this car?

I believe the company is called Rail Journeys West. At any rate, if they don't own the car, they are the ones that deal with the trips it goes on along with a couple other ex California Zephyr cars.

Do they have a web site? Are trips open to the public?

Does last car has drivers' cabin?

No, it does not. This tail car is from before the days push-pull service.

It was art deco age, isn't it. When I watched express trains from 30's and 40's of XX Century, I was impressed how beautiful they were...

I suppose you could call it Art Deco, although I would place at the very tail end of the Art Deco movement, as the equipment for the California Zephyr didn't come into service until 1949.

Nice catch! Wish you'd have told me. The Chief runs through my hometown, and I would've gladly driven down to catch it on the run through.

Thanks! I'll be sure to let you know next time for sure. Only thing with this time was that the cars were only on the Chief until Lamy, NM. After that they went to Santa Fe, NM.
