I saw a video by Game Theory saying that Sans and Papyrus are Gaster split into two separate beings, Sans coming first and Papyrus coming later, Sans is the left brain, and Papyrus is Gaster's right brain! If you look closely enough at the traps of Snowdin, what puzzle Sans and Papyrus find harder, and their personalities and even humor preference, there's a lot of evidence to support this!
