Description
Hey, It's been awhile, but here it is!I have been getting quite a few comments about Gaster being a dick.
I have no idea where this Gaster hate is coming from, but if I can spoil one thing it is that Gaster is a genuine nice guy. In future comics, it might seem like he is brash and unreasonable, but that is because he knows (or thinks) that it will be safest for his children.
Why would Gaster set Sans arm in front of Papyrus with no drugs?
1) He knew with Sans distracted it would be easier to do (If he let sans know there would be a struggling/ screaming match with the possibility of Sans short cutting or injuring himself further).
2) Sure it would hurt, but it would be quicker than trying to get Sans down to the lab where Sans would fully know what was about to happen.
3) Why would Gaster have anaesthetics on him? Or even a syringe?! You think Sans wouldn't have freaked out over a syringe? If Gaster left to get one, do you think Sans would have stayed there waiting? Humans need Drugs because we have skin, muscle, nerves and tendons in the way.
4) Why in front of Papyrus? Papyrus would have heard the screaming anywhere in the house; it wouldn't matter where he was. Also, it not going to "traumatize" Pap, he is smart and decisive and understands why it needed to be done.
5) Why not tell Papyrus to leave? Because it was distracting Sans, Gaster needs a distraction in one way or another, and unfortunately, it was Papyrus. Gaster will feel wrong about it, but he trusts Papyrus enough to know that he will forgive him later.
6) Gaster doesn't get a kick out of seeing pain. Not in my comics and not even in Zarla's Handplates! But he is the royal scientist and is bound to be desensitised from both his line of work AND having lived through the war.
I hope this settles any confusion about the intention of Gaster in my comic.

OHHH THIS COMIC HAS GRABBED MY HEART, like no other comic before. I swear, not even zarla's have grabbed my heart this hardcore. The emotions are just so raw and relatable. And I freaking love Gaster in this comic. Dadster for the freaking win. ^^

While I have come straight from Handplates and most emphatically believe that Gaster is NOT a good guy, I will agree that he doesn't seem to be a sadist. I think that the pain he's felt from the war is what drives him forward, both in this comic and in handplates. Just in this one, instead of doing what he thinks needs to be done 'whatever the cost', he seems to try to retain what little HP (hope) and life he can and move forward.
I do like these comics, and they are heartwarming, despite my ingrained headcanon of Handplates. I enjoy that you have logical reasons for what you do and how you move the plot forward. I'll just have to think of it as one of many universes, one worth stopping by in.

Hand plates is an amazing comic. I love reading it even though I am a die hard Dadster fan. I can see Gaster is both perspectives, but me personally coming from a science family and background, I just can't picture cold unfeeling Gaster as well as Dadster.
Thank you for trying out my comics😊. It's nice to see people with different veiws of Gaster taking a look at them. I do hope that you enjoy the new pages to come.

I'm glad that you are drawing on personal experience as a part of this comic; it's those little personal touches that make a story special.
Just like how there are many different personalities in the world and many things that drive us all, I think that we are looking at two perspectives of one character. HPGaster does feel, as we've seen in the little touches. The trembling of the hands when he tries to act heartless, betraying his true feelings, the flinches when Papyrus tries to redeem him, or journal entries where he discusses his drive to continue. A good example of this can be seen in Bad Choices . (Listen to Rhythmear's dub of it, it's good).
HPGaster cares for the monsters of the Underground, and desperately seeks a way to save his people from eternal imprisonment underground. He believes that the suffering that must be undertaken to find a way should rest solely on his shoulders, and that he is the only one that can save everyone. The fact that this involves the torture of Papyrus and Sans troubles him deeply, but despite that he thinks that he has no other option but to continue. That if he should give up now, all of his and everyone else's sacrifices would be for nothing. Therefore, he is desperately trying to convince himself that the suffering of the brothers is worth the salvation of the entire Underground.
The entire comic is a dissection of the hard choices we make, and as a result the struggles of Gaster to shut down his compassion. It's not that he's cold and unfeeling, it's that he is forcing himself to be cold and unfeeling, with all the effects as entailed. He projects a lot of this onto Sans during their conversations, as seen in Not That I Think About This A Lot Or Anything , because Sans is the one person he feels is intelligent enough to understand some of it that he can talk to without getting arrested. Granted he can't explain everything to them because that would legitimize them further as people, making his objectivity even more difficult to maintain. One bad decision after another, feeling like he can't back out and that only he can do this, all results in him driving himself forward despite the love he feels for his sons. He cares for them, and the choices he makes bears down on him heavily.
He believes that he is beyond redemption, and has no choice to continue.
Whew! Sorry for the long response, but the thought that he might be seen as cold and unfeeling was interesting to me. Your comics are sweet and a welcome reprieve from doom and gloom. But I like that Zarla uses difficult philosophical issues in her portrayal of Gaster, so despite your heartwarming story I can't help but believe in HPGaster as a prelude to the current tragedy that has befallen him. Otherwise, I might actually feel bad for the bastard.

Typically people see scientists as unfeeling and robotic, it's just a common stereotype.
I just know that somewhere Gaster's got more character to offer then some deranged doctor that hurts children. I like how Zarla's comics include a deeper struggle so we can see 2 sides of the same character, it creates a lot more depth and development to the story.

Actually it made perfect sense to me that he reset the bone while Sans was distracted xD Each time my brother would dislocate his finger it always seemed to hurt more when he knew it was coming because we always got a doctor that somehow managed to pop it back in when we were looking elsewhere. Plus as you've pointed out that he's live through the war, he would have more experience dealing with injuries that would most likely occur in both a battlefield and even at home.

He definitely has experience with injuries, but he never had to be patient or sympathetic before. It's harder to see a loved one in pain, much harder then it is a bunch of injured soldiers.
He is having a more difficult time with Sans then he would like to admit. Both from Sans's pain and the thought that his son would rather be in pain then confess to disobeying him

I really do enjoy that story too, just like I enjoy this one.
I've worked for and studied from scientists (environmental science major in college), so while there are a few really weird ones I can say with confidence that very few of them are unfeeling and robotic. Indeed, you have to be really passionate about science to want to slog through all of the difficult processes leading to a breakthrough.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. I really appreciate that in an artist. ^_^

I understand what Gaster's intentions and I enjoy the good dad Gaster comics, but when did that human attack Gaster? Was he one of the 6 human souls? And I highly doubt Paps is smart enough to know why exactly why Gaster reset sans' bone then and there, not because Paps is stupid which he is, but because he is like how old? He can't even make complete sentences so I'm going to guess not that old.

Weeeelll, Me personally, I prefer the badass sans, but of coarse he can't be that as a kid being raised as a normal monster. I think this sans has a big heart for trying to fight a human to save the underground; at least in this comic we know where Paps gets it from.

Papyrus doesn't know exactly why Gaster did that, but he trusts that if his father did it then it must have been necessary. Papyrus can understand things well, he is just still learning how to put his thoughts to words.

That baby is how old? Does he even know how to read yet??? He's too young to speak in full sentences even. (I mean I know you can teach babies to read, but still...) I dunno. How old is he? 2? 3? his motor skills seem quite advanced.
And again Poor lil Sans. Getting bones set is no fun.

He's about 3 in this. He can't speak very well, but I like to think that Papyrus is more abvance then most his age. He is surrounded by geniuses all the time 😆.

So one AU paints him as an asshole so everyone sees him as an asshole. I've seen many more Dadsters than Badsters. Man who speaks in hands, Ask Frisk and Company, this one. Seriously I refuse to believe one AU could make so many people dislike the guy.

I never saw Gaster in Handplates as an asshole personally xD From the few comics she's released where there were close calls with either Sans or Papyrus he does seem to act rather...intimate with the softer side of him that knows this is wrong. However I do believe that he wants to relieve Asgore of the pain of having to live up to his promise in which he made on a whim and in a short burst of anger.
