May be a little late now, or you may already know or lack interest, but Chambas' got a Youtube channel. Jefferey Cruz, I believe.

unfortunately I don't
I've never really recorded a session of colouring, but only have done some live streaming on BlogTV.

Very nice I do have a question though. For the perspective grid, what do you mean by 'horizontal and vertical lines'? Did you sit there and draw each line by hand or is there some sort of application in photoshop that you used?

question, how do you turn your scanned line art into a line art layer so i can put them in front of my colors. when i load my scans on to photoshop it's the back ground :S im confused

theCHAMBA In reply to Jumpfall [2008-09-04 16:01:15 +0000 UTC]
copy that 'background', paste and it's now a layer
set that layer on multiply or linear burn above your colours.
done.

Amazing ... these walkthroughs are very informative and fascinating.
It's great to see how a work like this comes to be.
(I apologize if you did not want constructive criticism on this, so feel free to ignore me, but I honestly like the image better before the last step WITHOUT the "Glow". It's a little TOO glowy, I think. Or maybe just not glowy in the right way.
...but what do I know. I couldn't recreate this if my LIFE depended on it. ...not without months or years of practice first anyway.)
An astounding piece none the less. ...I adore that movie as well.

opinions are all good, as art is subjective to a person's likes and dislikes.
so for one to prefer something over something else is all good. Can't exactly say that it's constructive criticism, but more of a personal opinion, which is all good eitherway.

I'm glad you did not take it as an insult.
I would go into more detail about what ways I think it detracts from the image, or how I think the glow effect could/should be done differently ... IF ... I was a little more clear about what part of it bothered me. Sadly, I do not have enough experience in that aria to know what exactly to suggest to improve it. I"m only just beginning to learn how to effectively make use of such effects in my own art, and have alot left to learn.
...so, the best I can do is help to point out an aria that may (or may not) need some more attention, with room for improvement. The rest of the image looks stupendous to me ... there is just something about that glow that looks "off".
Upon re-inspection of the image, I think you could improve the ring around the moon as well. It's just not quite...I'm not sure...
...and I can see the stars THROUGH the Moon, which is a bit odd.
Again, I'm just trying to be helpful. I mean no insult. Minor flaws like those are like pimples on an otherwise beautiful face. ...they bother you more than they should.
Keep up the spectacular work.

Quick question, did you make your own perspective grid? or was there one online that you found? because that looks like a very handy little tool.
Great piece by the way.

Oh lol, yeah I sorta overlooked that I just remember that on one of your last walkthroughs I saw one there too so I just thought that maybe there was a tutorial somewhere on how to make them or if you just figured it out on your own.

I still have a hard time believing you do all your coloring work with an optical mouse. Even after seeing this nifty walkthrough.
Pro work I have to say.

very informative! the perspective grids is a great idea. I'm very weak in backgrounds, so i think this will be a great help.
I'd love to know more about how you set the grids up. Do you do each "perspective" on a different layer using the pattern maker then transforming all three?
It's artists like you that make me come back to DA.

If you don't mind me asking, ano yung meaning ng "raw scan"? :3
And, do you just draw VERY light sketch lines then trace them over with a darker pencil? I'm confused about the whole lineart process, because my lineart tends to be very messy, so I have to ink it to clean it up. The problem is, I'm a messy inker as well. xD
Oh, at idol ko si Fievel.

rawscan
basically just a straight scan, nothing done to it.

Mimisaurus In reply to theCHAMBA [2008-02-08 01:43:40 +0000 UTC]
Oh, so you do just sketch with a lighter pencil and darken it later? ;3
Btw, I'm the same... I can understand, read and sing in Tagalog, but I'm not really an expert in speaking it. O.o I speak better English and Ilonggo.

Excellent, useful stuff as always .. how do you go about choosing the color to use for the tint layer? Do you start from the base color, or is this simply trial and error based on the mood of the piece?
