Description
So, I finally finished Christian's Christmas present this past Friday! I know its late, but I wasn’t able to give this project my full attention until school was over. I started it around early September, hoping that would be plenty of time to get it done before Christmas. And it would have been more than enough, if it wasn’t for all my homework….
Anyway. This is the main Shield from the game “The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker”, but not *the* main shield from most Zelda games. This one is just called the “Hero’s Shield”, where the other one is called the “Hylian Shield”.

Also, here are some references to the different designs I took from:
- This one is the actual style from the game. It’s color is a bit more copper than brass I guess. But I liked the brass color a lot, so thats what I went with. The main things I took from this one, was just to make sure the fan made designs I copied were accurate enough. And I decided to make the winged thing white, like this shield. I tried silver at first. But then I changed it because there wasn’t enough contrast with all that silver.
- This one is a very simplified version of the Shield. I mainly took the brass color from it, along with the winged thing being a silhouette. Because I just didn’t want to try and make the face on it, and have it look stupid. Plus I didn’t need to make it take any longer than it already had haha.
- And this was *the* main one I copied. Minus some of the Hylian markings, the shape of the shield, the scratches, and the very detailed winged design. Even the main color on this one was a bit more of a brass color.

HOW I MADE IT:
Okay. So, I did the base as cardboard, as well as the metal pieces that are holding the handle in (The handle is just PVC Pipe under all that fabric). I did originally cover the cardboard in Bondo (Car Body Filler) to make it tougher, and then I figured I’d smooth it all out by sanding it. But it wasn’t working quite the way I wanted (But it did make the cardboard stronger. So it wasn’t a total waste). So I ended up covering the front and the back with a large piece of craft foam, then did coats and coats of Epoxy Resin. Then painted the front and back (Yes, I painted the wood look by hand. And It actually wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be). Then after painting it and putting a coat of varnish on, I hot glued two pieces of craft foam across the back, and *then* I painted them (I don’t know why I didn’t paint them first. I had to have a very steady hand). And then the edges of the shield are made of Model Magic (a sort of clay… kind of). I thought of using Apoxie Sculpt (Which is a really strong clay, and it is a breeze to sand down), but it would have added so much more weight to the shield. And pretty much everything else was made with either craft foam or Model Magic. I will say though; the back plate thing that the handle is attached to, is two pieces of cardboard. The first piece was glued down just by hot glue. But then I put a few nails in since that is the area you will be holding the handle by. So, it needed a lot of support. Which is why I then covered the cardboard and nails in Epoxy Resin (That stuff is so strong! I love it! Only annoying thing is that it takes about a day to dry). And then I pretty much repeated that step on the second piece of cardboard. But I first nailed the plate of cardboard into the metal handle pieces. And then set that down on the first plate piece of cardboard (which still had wet Resin on it. Which works better than glue once its dry). And then I covered that in Resin, and nailed that down to the first piece of cardboard, let that dry overnight, covered it in Model Magic, and thats pretty much it besides painting it. The Shield is still a little heavier than I wanted it to be. But at least you can hold it by the handle without it falling off. That was my biggest concern, but I figured out how to avoid that problem. So, I’m pretty happy haha.

No problem! I hope it wasn't too confusing. I really need to start taking pictures of my work as I go, so make official tutorials haha
