Description
Another collage thing of all of my cosplays from last year, 2016!1) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I went as him for Halloween. Now of course, with this character I could really go anywhere with how I wanted to look. There are MANY different takes on the character - some human but grotesque, others more monstrous and mutated. So I didn't have any reference pictures, I just decided to go and do my own take of the character. I left my hair at the length and color it was, I used the dress shirt, pants, shoes, and jacket from my Oswald Cobblepot cosplay, and got the top hat, cane, and cape from Halloween Spirit. As for the makeup, I obviously wanted to look like I was transforming from Jekyll into Hyde, so I wanted half of my face - as well as one of my hands - beginning to mutate. I originally thought of going for a more scaly, lizard-like look, but I changed that. I still kept the green and blotchy look, but instead of scales, I went more for having bluish growths show up everywhere. I wasn't able to get my hands of fake skin or any sort of FX makeup to use for the growths, so I went with gluing pieces of cotton balls to my face and hand, and man oh man, never again! Trying to get makeup onto cotton is a serious pain in the ass - having to try and smear it on without having the cotton tear or get removed around my face. Anyway, I did that, plus used a thin brush to make little bluish purple veins at the edges of where Jekyll is turning into Hyde. I even went as far as cutting my nails on my right hand so one hand looked human while the other had long claw-like nails. Just a minor detail I decided last minute. I walked around - carrying a purple bottle we had to be my potion - and I felt very sophisticated doing so. Only my family and a close friend I ran into knew who I was dressed as, however there was a woman who passed by who had commented on my outfit and said I had the most sophisticated-looking costume of the night
2) Bradley Nicholson from the animated show "Milo Murphy's Law". This cosplay was completely unintentional and was purely an accident. I had gotten my hair cut and dyed recently, and when I woke up that morning, I decided to wear my button-up grey plaid shirt and dark jeans. And when I went to go walking past the hallway mirror, I did a double-take at the realization I had accidentally sort of cosplayed as Bradley from "Milo Murphy's Law".
3) Kurt Wagner aka Nightcrawler from "X-Men: Apocalypse". My family and I went to Fan Expo (again) and being that how much I absolutely LOVED "X-Men: Apocalypse", plus how Nightcrawler is easily my favorite X-Men, I decided to go as him for the convention even though I knew it was going to be a major challenge to pull off. I had to style my hair, use liquid latex to glue on the ears, draw out where the scars/markings would be before cutting and applying the string using liquid latex, cover my entire face, neck, and ears blue, and apply fangs to my canine teeth - all of which took about 2 hours and 15 min. to do. I can't sew, so my mom made the gloves, feet, and tail for me. The gloves, I had to trace my hands and then she sewed the material before I made the nails out of card tags and glued them on. The feet were a pair of dark blue fuzzy socks my mom had, which she cut and sewed to make two separate toes in each. I did the nails the same way I did for the gloves. And the tail was made using a foam tube that's used to go around electrical wires, and the tip was made from a piece of sturdy foam. My mom ended up cutting a hole into my pants and then put the tail through and sewed it into the pants so it wouldn't go anywhere when I walked. As for my clothes, I wanted to go as Nightcrawler when he's in his circus clothing - The first scene we're introduced to him. The jacket I had gotten from Hot Topic awhile back and I figured it'd work best given the design on it. As for the rest, I got the frilled shirt, pants, and scarf (which I used as a belt) all from Value Village. It was a LOT of work, but damn, it all paid off and was TOTALLY worth it. I got a TON of pictures taken - every now and then, someone would come up to me and ask if they could get a picture with me or a picture of me. A lot of people commented on my costume too. It was insane! I felt like a celebrity! I can't tell you how many times I got pulled over to get my picture taken; it had to have been over 20, it felt like it was anyway. Definitely the best year of Fan Expo ever!
Bonus: After the convention, we went out to a Wendy's for dinner (20 min. drive away) and we went inside, still in costume. As we're eating, sitting at a small table across from where I'm sitting is a small boy (probably 7-8 years old) with his mom and possibly his grandma. I noticed how he kept staring at me. He then started tugging on his mom's arm and was pointing me out while saying, "Mommy! Mommy, look! Look, it's him! It's him!" and then went on to start talking about X-men with his mom, I guess to remind her of what movie my character's from. And as we were going to leave, I glanced at him and he was all like, "You're him! You're the blue guy from the X people!" And I couldn't stop smiling at this point. He then was like, "You're so cool!" and then both he and his mom asked if it was alright if he could get a picture taken with me, which really, how could I say no to an adorable kid like him?! He came over and commented on how he liked my tail and then got in a fighting stance beside me, looking ready to fight bad guys. it was SO cute! And right when I was going to leave, he asked why I was all blue and I told him I'd gone to a convention, which he thought was totally cool and he said, "When I'm older, I want to go to a convention!" I made that kid's night and he made mine. it was awesome!
4) Harley Quinn from "Suicide Squad". I actually really thoroughly enjoyed "Suicide Squad" and Harley Quinn was easily my favorite character. And I knew then I had to go as her for Fan Expo. I got the choker, bracelets, jacket, shirt, shorts, fishnet stockings, and gun holster all from Hot Topic. The shoes I got at Value Village and the wig I got at Spencers' - in which I then dyed both sides blue and pink. I also drew the tattoos on my legs and face using liquid eyeliner. As for the mallet, I made it using paper mache. Step by step, this is what I did: I had a large piece of foam (which was rectangular by the way) and I had some flexible card paper that I wrapped around it, taping it all together. I also cut out two large card circle to tape to either end so the foam wouldn't go anywhere. Then came the "fun part", the paper mache (I remembered then just how much I HATED paper mache). I did about two layers of newspaper, then two layers of plain white paper. I painted the whole thing white, two coats. Then the REAL fun part, painting and decorating it. I found a diamond pattern online and printed it out. I cut out the diamonds and then used the sheet as a stencil for the diamonds - I taped it to the mallet and carefully painted on the diamonds. Once that was done, I painted the ends brown (making the edges darker to make it look like it had been through hell). I used electrician's tape for the black lines, and used both red and black sharper for the smiley face on either end as well as for the writing. As for the rod, I got a dowel rod and my dad cut it to the right size. I then painted it before having my dad carefully drill into the mallet and stick the rod through. It was a lot of work, but definitely worth it.
