Description
(Made with Pixlr)America's oldest hero and possibly the world's first, Sergeant States is the stuff of legends with hundreds of stories and accounts branching from nearly two centuries of history. But what is the true origin of the Mighty Sarge who fought for freedom and justice? Only time truly knows.
In 1775, America was preparing for a war for it's independence from Britain. Desperate for materials, miners were sent out to caves to find any possible materials that can be used for later equipment such as guns or bayonets. One miner struck gold, or rather something better than gold, when he discovered a completely new metal inside an ore. He brought it to some local scientists to confirm it was indeed an undiscovered and incredibly rare material with further tests proving it was incredibly durable and self-sustaining. The news was brought to General George Washington who requested to find more of the substance, giving it the name of "Americonium" after the land it was found on. For days, miners tried to find more Americonium but fell short to only a few measly rocks. Nonetheless, the metal was smelted and crafted into the blade of a sword fit for a golden hilt to create a sword similar to Excalibur and was gifted to Washington to use against the Redcoat army. Washington rejected the sword as he believed someone other than him shall wield it and decided that the weapon would be the stepping stone to creating a living breathing weapon.
The sword was instead given to what Washington considered his best soldier. Shortly after he decided to do more with the soldier and turn him into a figure of freedom and independence that would secure their win in the war. He destroyed any records of him and gave him a mask and powdered wig to hide his identity for he was now known by the name "Sergeant States" (despite the fact that America had no states in this era? Don't think about it.). Quickly, States became a machine against the British known amongst his fellow soldiers for his tactical genius, immense strength, and even his espionage as a spy. Over time, he became more than a man and into a legend cemented into the history books as the masked agent of truth and freedom and the scourge against British rule. It wasn't until 1783 was the war won and Britain lost. But States was not done yet. He still had the fighting spirit within him and he knew he had to preserve it to protect his country. The only way to do this was by throwing himself into a cryogenic freezer built by Benjamin Franklin with the instructions to only be awoken when America needed him most.
Throughout the years, each president of the United States was aware of the frozen Sergeant located under the White House but chose not to use him, afraid of wasting his power for something beneath him. But the time came for States' first unfreezing in 1862 when he was awoken by President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln debriefed States' of the current war and recruited him to fight for the Union against the Confederate army. States agreed and was quickly sent to aid the soldiers fighting in their own home land. After news broke out of States alive again, General Robert E. Lee was disgruntled. He thought it was cheating that the Union gets to use him and decided to create their own Sergeant. The mines where Americonium was found, they mined the entire cave for and came across a hefty sum of it. Instead of a sword, they instead turned the metal into bullets and granted them to the Confederate's best soldier whos records and name have been wiped and wearing a mask of their flag, he became the first real enemy of Sergeant States: Captain Confederate.
It didn't take long for the Sergeant and Captain to fight. They met on the battlefield and would engage in battle relentlessly, often having to end it when their respective men would retreat or Cap would run out of bullets. Soldiers would report that their fights were intense and deadly to the point that no one would dare approach them let alone stop them. At one point they even fought on horseback with Captain Confederate's horse, Cotton, breaking the spine of a Union soldier that caused States to lose it and nearly behead the Captain, only stopped by a cannonball coming at him that he sliced with his sword and letting the Captain get away in fear. By the end of the war, the Confederates lost and States returned to his icy slumber with a thank you from President Lincoln, who was disappointed that he couldn't come to a show with his wife. States' declined as his duty was protecting the country when it needed him. This may have been a poor decision as Captain Confederate decided to leave his final mark by assassinating Lincoln that very night States was gone. But he didn't make it as him and his horse had fallen into a frozen lake he thought he could cross. The plot was instead carried out by Cap's closest friend, John Wilkes Booth. States was none the wiser.
The second and final time States was awoken was in 1941 by President Franklin Roosevelt. He once again debriefed of the entire situation and gave him an extraordinary mission. By this point, the world has become accustomed to superheroes and Roosevelt wanted them to aid him in their war, assembling a team for the Allies with States leading them into battle. He agreed and was brought into war with a standard soldier's uniform and his mask as he Revolutionary outfit and wig would make him stand out. States eventually got to know his team as the Justice Champions, compiled of many costumed crime fighters and Nazi hunters alongside other soldiers. The team was brought into France first alongside the soldiers on D-Day and would mostly carry out top secret missions usually involving the Nazis after a superweapon or power that would help them get the upper hand. The main enemy of the Champions was the Übermensch, a Nazi superhuman and experiment that created a man indestructible to everything in the world. Or so it seemed.
During World War II, States also made a good chunk of allies that worked alongside the Champions. One of which was none other than Captain Confederate himself, who was frozen in that lake for years and recently discovered to still be alive and sent to the battlefield as a form of forced redemption. States was less than enthusiastic that his old arch enemy was working alongside him, but Confederate proved he was useful to the team and their causes. He was even starting to trust him for a bit. That was until States discovered that Cap had killed several of his own soldiers with a plot to kill States and the Champions, proclaiming that he would return home as a lone survivor and war hero that would run for office and would use his influence to make the South rise again. States called him insane and engaged in a duel that ended in the Captain losing his life to States' gun and his corpse returning home for a proper burial per States' request.
Near the end of the war, the Champions had finally reached Germany and were closing in on Hitler's base. That was until Übermensch started attacking them from a zeppelin in the air. Using the help of Platinum Woman's flight, States got inside the blimp and began to fight Übermensch. Unfortunately, States was badly beaten and resulted his last resort of shooting the Übermensch. This worked in his favor, though, as the bullets went into the shoulders of the superhuman. States remembered his gun was loaded with Americonium bullets he took from Captain Confederate and deduced that his weakness was the metal itself. This gave States hope and he began to attack the Nazi with everything he had. The duel was long and bloody with States' famous blade breaking off of its hilt and States' arm getting dislocated. Übermensch was ready to launch one final missile at the soldiers and Champions, but was stopped by States' plunging the blade through his heart, killing the Übermensch. In his final breath, Übermensch activated a self destruct on the zeppelin leaving States panicked. He did what he had to do and sacrificed himself by crashing the blimp into Hitler's base, causing it to explode in a giant blaze.
A body was never recovered, but everyone knew that Sergeant States had died while saving his country and ending the ultimate evil. In his honor, a statue of States was constructed on a man made island next to the Statue of Liberty while a large grave was made near the Washington Monument. It is believed that on the day of his funeral, every bald eagle in America shed a tear.
Rest In Peace
Sergeant States
1755-1944
Additional Notes:
-Many legends of States had circulated for decades. The most popular one is that his power came from the patriotism of the American people.
-Despite coming from British decent like most Americans at the time, States denounced his heritage and claimed he was born on American soil.
-States had a pet bald eagle in the Revolutionary War. That same eagle was the one that inspired the Founding Fathers to make the eagle their national bird.
-States was also present in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
-A popular rumor amongst soldiers was that Sergeant States was the alter ego of George Washington as they were never seen together. The rumor dispelled with the account of a soldier who met both and noted that States' teeth were healthier than Washington's.
-States was always against slavery as he believed that his country could not be the home of the free with it. His opinion became stronger in the Civil War after a black soldier had saved his life. He would later denounce segregation during World War II. His opinion likely formed after an encounter with Alexander Hamilton.
-States had trouble adjusting to working alongside the British in World War II because of the bad blood he had with their whole country. He eventually learned to put the past behind him.
-It's possible that before States became a soldier, he was studying law.
-Years after States' death, comic book retelling of his story were being sold nationwide. But due to the fact that much of his history was a mystery to the public, most of it had to be adlibbed or guessed upon. They didn't sell too well.

Sorry that this design might look a bit choppy, I honestly had trouble finding all of the pieces needed to make this. This was mostly made to celebrate the one year anniversary of the original Sergeant States piece that can be found [here] .
